OMG! and Stashbusting

First stash busting building is going on over here. GASP!  I did not buy one piece of fabric this month and yet the stash grows.  I received 1.75 yards of fabric as fat quarters -- some from the recent retreat and some from an FCQ E Quilter sharing!  And, I only had one measly finish that half the blocks were from the E Quilters group.  Sigh.

Next up is my OMG (One Monthly Goal) report for May.  You might have guessed I missed my goal.  Sigh again.  After 4 straight months of success I just don't have sewing time right now.  So my lovely batik quilt is going back into the UFO storage bin until after the move.  It is definitely much farther along than it was so that is great.

My OMG for June is going to be very small, I am stealing time for sewing from working on going through things to clear out before the move.  So, I am planning on quilting and binding the quilt I put together at the end of the retreat.  The turquoise fabric to the back left is all ready to load on Ruthie.  Hum, blue next to the purple in the top row is actually more turquoise.  For some reason it looks more cadet blue in this picture.  (Hey, what do I expect when I take pictures at night???)

I'm linking up with Red Letter Quilts, Can I get a Whoop Whoop?, Let's Be Social, and Needle and Thread Thursday. (Some of these are not "live" yet so I'll come back tomorrow morning to link with them.)   Take some time to hop over to these linky parties to see what folks are doing this week.

On a more personal note every thing is coming along nicely for the move.  We are selling unwanted things hand over foot.  The new house is smaller on the main living floor.  The finished basement will be great for a new studio but won't have an office for Pat although that may be in the future plans as there is an unfinished room that could be finished.  I've gone through the 2 extra bedrooms (closets and dressers) and have pretty much cleaned out what we don't want.  I've stashed quilts or bedding in the dresser drawers.  (AGH -- I haven't even made a dent in storing all the quilts.) Tomorrow I go back to clearing out and dropping things off at Goodwill. Packing starts on the 23 of this month. (Double AGH!)

Tuesday Meanderings 5 - 24 - 2016

Retreat was fabulous as usual.  I slept well both nights which meant I was pretty productive during the days.

Here's a short synopsis of the weekend. I drove up Thursday and got caught up in traffic.  That's pretty typical for the I 95 corridor and the 495 beltway.  My 3 and a half hour trip ended up being 5+ hours although I will admit that I spent more time than I usually do for lunch. Not a fun drive this time.

Sharon and I left early Friday morning, went over the Bay Bridge and did our normal stop for a breakfast at Cracker Barrel.  Yum.  We were set up for sewing by about 11 am.  It helps having the retreat start early Friday morning in terms of how much you can get done.  We all spend a lot of time catching up and chatting.  The first day I was working on finishing some projects so I put the binding on a quilt, a zipper in a pouch, binding on a kit for some sort of envelope.  Didn't get to finish the envelope because I failed to bring velcro I would need.  Sigh.

Girl "Happy Quilt" from blocks made by FCQ E-Quilters. Pattern is here.  Mary has some wonderful, easy patterns.
Saturday dawned with heavy clouds and all day rain in the forecast.  Perfect weather to keep us sewing! I pulled out my batik rails and got all the 6" rails sewn into 12" blocks and then sashed it all in black.  It seemed to take me forever although I will admit I had to make some more of the 6" blocks.  By the time I was done I was sick of working on this one.  It's going back into the UFO pile for a little while.  All I plan to do to finish it is put a small (maybe 3") border on it.  (Down at the bottom right you can see the small zippered bag I finished up.)
Five years ago at the FCQ retreat we swapped 6.5" rail blocks made with either "hot" colors or "cool" colors.  It was time to do something with them.  Remember this quilt I shared from the FCQ show?  I think I like her more subtle colors.  This quilt will live with me for a while and then I'll give it away somewhere.

Next out was blocks I won at Country Piecemakers retreat 2 or 3 years ago.  Before I left home I made one more block and organized them into rows so all I had to do was sew them together.  No individual picture of them but they are at the bottom left of the picture below. Sharon and I spread out everything we worked on on her family room floor. Brett was interested but didn't decide to curl up with any of the tops.

The top two and middle left are Sharon's. The middle right and bottom two are mine.  The hot pads were a make and take.  Mine is blue and Sharon's had cute cooking chickens on it.  Definitely not her style but they looked great in a pot holder.
My goals last week were so vague that I succeeded at all of them!

May 16, 2016
View a couple of lighthouses in the Outer Banks of NC
Enjoy fun times and good food with Bob and Barb
Add a few pieces to each kit
Enjoy the FCQ retreat in Maryland
Sew like a fiend and get whatever I can done!

Now, this week is different.  I've got very specific things to get done!

Pick a quilt in the waiting pile to quilt! Load & quilt.

And, here's why a lot of organizing and cleaning up will be going on in my household for the next several months.  First the back story.  Pat and I moved to central Virginia 6 years ago for a job.  We ended up about 40 minutes west of downtown Richmond because the job was another hour or so southwest in a very rural area.  For the first several years we loved it.  But as we've aged (gasp!) we realize that keeping 2+ acres of yard mowed and being 25 to 30 minutes from stores, hospitals and restaurants wasn't exactly part of our retirement plan.

So the long and the short of it is we put our house on the market in late February.  It went under contract to the folks who saw it first. (Isn't that a nice reflection on all the things we did to the house?) Except, it was contingent on the sale of their house.  Which, didn't happen.  Eventually, a family who did not have a contingency made an offer we couldn't refuse. (Nor did we want to really!)

We had been scouting 55+ communities a little farther north which would make us closer to our kids (1 hour and 1.5 hours away if there is no traffic on that blasted I 95 corridor.) One community we liked better than the other two and had a model that we like.  We'll be moving into a new home in the community although we looked at nearly every resale that came up for sale.  The whole let's move thing happens at the end of June.  Needless to say, once again it is time to clean up, clear out, downsize and ... well whatever else needs to be done.  We are selling some of our furniture and the lawn tractor and anything else we can move out.  So my postings won't be as quilt oriented and no doubt will be sparse as the move out date arrives.

Here's the new house.  Reminds me of our years in California where the houses are close together. (Read that -- less yard to mow!) Sod is piled under the tarp ready to make the mud a yard. It's slightly smaller than our current house but I have a nice big space in the finished basement to set up the sewing studio.  Eventually we'll probably finish the other basement room to make an office for Pat which will leave us 3 bedrooms upstairs and we'll still have a lot unfinished basement to store odd ball things.  No doubt I'll continue to post about the move over the next few weeks.

Today I'm linking up with Monday Makings, Main Crush Monday and Sew Cute Tuesday.

That's it for me today.  I've got a closet to clean out! I will need to make a list of all the areas I need to work on and assign a day to them.  That way I will get it all done.  I'd rather spend the day sewing but that will be curtailed a lot over the next few weeks.

Happy Quilting All!

Mid Move

Greetings from Richmond, Virginia!

The good news is the everything was eventually packed and the truck was loaded.

The bad news is only two folks showed up to load the truck and finish the packing.

After a 2:00 am consult, Pat sent me off to Jenny and Brian's house with Raggs around 10 am. We didn't want to worry about Raggs getting in the way of the loading. (yep, we were both awake at 2 am and have been sleeping erratically all week.)

The other bad news is they didn't finish loading until 9:30 pm. Pat drove an hour or so and then got a room. Luckily he was so tired he fell right asleep and didn't wake up until 6 or so. But he got going early and was at J & B's before we left for the shower.

The shower was so much fun. Jenny has a wonderful group of friends and I really enjoy spending time with them. Heidi, the maker of this quilt, made the most darling dress, panties and booties for the baby. And, she did a wonderful job. No picture now as I couldn't find my camera when we were leaving for the shower. Although I did find it tonight -- my luck.

Here's the baby quilt I made for Jen. All it is is a simple 9 patch with all center squares white. And it is sashed in white with red corner stones.

And, here's the back. I bought a Moda Valentine's Day panel and cut off the Happy Valentine's Day sentiment. Then I added a turquoise border and a red border. I actually bought lime green for the border to go with the leaves but liked this turquoise I had at home. I used a stripe on the binding. Most of the squares came from the same line of Moda fabric. But I was very happy to use some stash too. I quilted it on Ruthie with Daisy Swirl panto, red Presencia thread and Warm and White cotton. I really like this quilt and wish I didn't have to give it up. But, it will be perfect for my special baby girl!
It's time to get to bed to do a little reading. Tomorrow my real work begins. Hopefully by Saturday we'll have a lot of the house in good shape. Pat goes to work next Monday. I'm sure he'll miss his short "retirement."

Happy Quilting All! I'll be back quilting with you in a couple of weeks.

35 days and counting

News Flash:
Pat and I Are Moving

Pat's was downsized from his job in August. So we thought, ah, early retirement, start a little business, do a little woodworking. All was good. Except, he's a high energy person. The economy is tuff so people weren't spending money on hiring tests and human resources consulting. And, we wanted to move closer to the grand baby (ok, and our kids too.) It'll be about 2 and a half hours away.

Part of the traveling I've been doing has been up and down to Virginia while he interviewed and I got an overview of the area. We didn't want to end up in a really rural area again -- I wanted to be able to get to stores easily (if I wanted to) and have other quilters nearby. We were looking north and west of Charlottesville but that was ending up as over an hour commute to Dillwyn, Va. We went down again last week. (As in, I got home on Monday, rested Tuesday and was in the car again on Wednesday!) Thursday and Friday we looked at houses in Powhatan. Look due east on the yellow line from the red star. It is supposedly 45 minutes away. Hopefully he'll find a few short cuts. (Thanks to Map Quest for the map.)
We have a contract on a house. And it has a craft room/studio already set up. And a room for Ruthie. (I'm sure the real estate agent thought we were bit weird when we said we needed a big extra room or two.) It seems a bit smaller than our current house until you count the two upstairs rooms.

So now I need to get in gear. I have a top secret project to work on. I have a quilt I want to get done so I at least have a finish in May. I have some 9 patch blocks to make for a guild swap for a disappearing 9 patch. I will be packing my stash myself as I have it folded and arranged by color. Notice I did not say NEATLY arranged. I've been plundering it as of late so it has gone a bit a stray. And, I need to put stuff away so it is easier to pack. Don't worry, I am NOT packing the house. We hire nice people to do that. (But, unfortunately, I have to unpack the house...)

When I decided to post about our move I decided to use a count-down to the move as the headline. I was shocked to realize we're moving in 35 days. Some how 5 weeks sounds so much longer than 35 days. I'll be posting but probably not a whole lot. I'm about out of battery for my lap top and my top secret project is calling my name.

Happy Quilting All!
