Monday Meanderings 4 - 28 - 2025

A great week for my stitching and a quilting celebration.  First the Virginia Star Quilt Guild celebrated their 40th anniversary.  We are set up as a social club rather than an educational group.  So, we decided to have a formal tea to celebrate our 40th year. Here are a few pictures from our celebration.

Guests were greeted with name tents. The flowers in the back were arranged by our member Mary. (I donated the use of my favorite vase which had been my mother's.)

One of the table decorations before all the other items were added.

Yummy scones were served.  Notice the cookie (!) that had a special design on it celebrating the guild's anniversary.

We also had a display of several quilts from our members. This one πŸ‘†πŸΌis a president's quilt from several years ago. The members made houses to be put into the quilt.

Most of these pieces were from classes the guild sponsored.  The big quilt πŸ‘†πŸΌ hanging is Jamestown Landing made by Shirley K. from a class by Bonnie Hunter.  (I have a matching one in turquoise from the same class. You can see it here.)

We had a Pat Sloan workshop.  This is Linda K's result of the class. πŸ‘†πŸΌ Below πŸ‘‡πŸΌ is Karen E's version. They are both called Mama's Garden.  What fun to see two very different quilts from the same class.

Now on to my normal Monday blog content!  It was a good week for stitching. Here's my goals list from last week.

4/21/25

✅Make Cali-Co quilt along April Block — done.

✅Quilt Orange Peel on domestic machine — done, waiting to bind

Finish another hat — half made.

✅✅Make 2 more Equilters 9 patches — finished the cut out ones from last week and 3 more done.

I'm enjoying working on each block of this mystery quilt along from Coriander Quilts. This week I cut out all the white strips and a selection of squares for the corners. (That'll save time while making the rest of the blocks.)

It's such a good feeling to make lots of progress on an old top.  I started by quilting the big circles the peels made. One column done. Then I started on the next column. Except, um, I got lost following the circles and made a wrong turn. Ok, I can deal with that. By the end of the day I had echo stitched all the peels but not as big circles. πŸ‘‡πŸΌ The stitching still enhances the big circles but also the inside of the circles.

The next day I got the borders done. (Pictures to come.) Which brings me to this week's goals. Yep, I'm planning on doing the binding.

4/28/25

Bind orange peel quilt

Finish knitting hat

Begin 3 yard quilt project

Make more 9 patches

Attend dress rehearsal and sing two concerts with Spotsylvanians

My 3 yard quilt project has a deadline. It was originally Sunday the 4th. Luckily it can be postponed to the end of May instead.  The fabric comes in tomorrow so I can get started on it. It's a secret project that will be a gift. I'll tell more about later.

My 15 minutes of stitching has been successful again this week. Yee haw! I doubt if I'll make it all year but it feels great to keep this up!

W/ending 4/27/25. 117 days of 2025

  • 15 minute days/Apr = 27/27
  • 15 minute days/2024 = 117/117 days
  • Success rate = 100%
I'll be linking with my regular parties. Check out these parties to see what quilters are doing this week.

It's going to be a long week with not as much stitching time as I would want. But I'm actually looking forward to having Monday evenings at home instead attending rehearsals. We'll be singing the National Anthem at the Fred Nats minor league baseball game later in the month.  And the neighborhood chorus is getting ready for concerts at the end of May. So I'll still be singing.

That's it for me today.  If you are interested in mysteries and sew alongs I posted   May's info on April 26.

Monday Meanderings 10 - 3 -2022

 YIPEE!

I'm so excited.  I'm going to a quilting retreat with my friends from Country Piecemakers today (or Monday depending on when you read this.)  It should be a wonderful week. So before I go let's see how I did do on my goals last week. I'm very pleased with it.

9/26/22

✅Trim and bind turquoise quilt

✅Finish last 3 composition book covers

Make Sept BOM from A Quilting Life -- again not done. Oops!

✅Get projects ready for next week’s retreat

Go to Virginia State fair; man VaStar booth

Oh that poor Sept BOM from A Quilting Life -- it's been on my to do list for weeks.  I just picked fabrics for it. I'm taking them with me on retreat and hope to get it made and maybe even the one that will come out on Thursday.  I'll let you know next week whether I've succeeded.

But everything else was done and I'm happy at all the check marks. Here's what I am planning to do this week. (A week with no cleaning, no cooking and all the sewing I want to do!)

10/3

Get Happy Blocks & string blocks to top stage

Make baby quilt top

Make all 79 triangles for Tumbling Triangles

Get other projects brought  moved forward

Enjoy retreat!

On to photographs.  First up is Ellie's Flowers on display in the Virginia Star Quilt Guild's booth at the Virginia State Fair.  I was able to get the card in the same picture.  Remember this was a challenge to use a card to inspire a quilt. She sent me a nifty 3 d floral arrangement card.

At the last guild meeting we made fast, easy pumpkins. Here's mine on my orange table runner. It was a lot of fun to make this pumpkin.

And now, I'd like to share a big win for me. I cleared off the front of my cutting table.  Take a minute to look at it last March.  I don't think I ever got it cleaned off then. But look at it now. Some of the fabrics that were piled up here are going to be available for my fellow retreaters to adopt. A bit of the fabric has been safely stashed in the basket so I can deal with it when I get back.

I don't think I've seen that mat for years.  It doesn't look like I ever cut on it. My goal is to keep that cleared off (more or less) for the whole month of October. (And maybe longer.)  One thing I'm trying to do is let go of the smallest scraps.  I generally cut 2" and 2.5" squares.  I definitely use the 2.5" ones.  I've got a plan for 2" squares too.  But what do you do with 1.5" squares?  I'm not sure I'll ever use that size!  Scraps are a never ending battle.

So it's time to get this post published and for me to get to bed.  I've got a lot to do tomorrow.  Here's the list of my Linky parties.  I hope to spend some time this week surfing to see what quilters are doing.
To Do Tuesday
That's it for now.  I'm packing tomorrow morning and heading off to retreat.  It's a new location this year that takes a bit longer to get to.  No problem -- we can't check in until 3 pm.  Should work well.

Class Time

Wednesday I attended an all day class with Debby Kratovil with Virginia Star Quilt Guild.  The morning class was Pyramids using a 60ΒΊ ruler with the afternoon session called Fractured Jewels using leftovers from making the Pyramids piece.  I was happy to attend as it had been scheduled in 2020 and was canceled due to Covid.  It was great fun and nice to get together with quilters again.

I was losing steam during the afternoon. But I was able to get two of these rows of these pyramid pieces sewn by the end of class. (These were just laid out in this picture.)

I used set of ombre batik strips.  I am tickled with what I've done so far but I haven't been able to spend any more time on them yet.

Here's Karen's version in progress. It was fun to see all the different fabrics used to make this little wall hanging.  I'm going to see if I have enough fabric to make mine a little bigger.  Or perhaps I have some other batiks I could add in.

I came home to eat dinner and rest a bit before going back to the regular monthly guild meeting.  Debby was the guest speaker and shared a Power Point of her quilts along with some actual quilts that showed her great patterns and ideas.  Here's a link to her blog to see what else she is doing.  She designs patterns for various fabric manufacturers and her own line of patterns.

The other big accomplishment this week is finishing the secret project including quilting and binding it.  Check back in on Sunday to see what I have been working on.

On the home front we've found a new home.  No, we aren't moving.  We have a cardinal nest in our holly tree right outside our 3 season room.  Pat sits out there and was able to watch the cardinal make the nest.  The tree is in bloom and there are bees buzzing all around.  We haven't seen much of the cardinal.  But bonus!  There was an egg in there yesterday or so.  I'll try to get a picture of it soon.  The egg is beautifully speckled.

I'm linking up to the following Linky parties:

Check out what makers are doing across the web. And, excitement, my improv beginning was featured on this week's Wednesday Wait Loss.

I hope you can come back Sunday for the reveal of my secret project is.  I can't wait to share it with you.

Successful Charity Sewing Day

I can check off one of my goals this week.  I spent a good part of yesterday working at the the Virginia Star Quilters charity open sew.  It started at 8:30 but I didn't make it until a little before 11.    Someone had donated several finished tops, block sets and the like.  A committee had prepared kits for people to sew during the day.

I got to work tying a "summer" quilt -- one without batting.  Except, it had been a long time since I tied a quilt... I put the thread between every block -- not a problem except the blocks were about 4" and that was way too many ties.  It took us forever to finish them!  But it got done! (hum, I wonder whose feet those are! Not mine!)

Next up was an interestingly designed quilt.  It was a wonderful mix of fabric and must have been really easy to make.  This one got tied pretty quickly and then we trimmed the batting and turned the back up to the front and stitched it down.

We had another quilt similar to this one and we pinned it and someone did "organic" lines -- that is slightly wavy lines quilted up and down. It looked terrific and was pretty fast. I wish I'd gotten a picture of that one too.  (It was getting late in the afternoon and I was pooped!)

I'm not sure whether this was a donated top or whether one of the members put this one together.  Bt it sure came out nicely.

Our regular scheduled meeting was held after the sew in. It's amazing how many quilts were finished and tops made by about a dozen dedicated quilters.    I should have taken pictures of the pile of finished quilts -- I think about 10 were finished during the day.  And, we probably have another 8 to 10 tops ready to finish. I brought one home to throw on Ruthie too.  All of these quilts will go to a local agency for seniors.  (Wait, most of us sewing were seniors.)

You know what comes next!  Another day of Christmas in July.
