A Couple More Finishes!

Today I have two more finishes to share.

First up is a project with blocks made by the FCQ Equilters -- years ago! Yes, I still have several different block sets that should be made into quilt/s. This project used 16 patches made with 2" (unfinished) squares in red, white and blue.  I added 6" x 3" flying geese to make stars.

I used FanFare quilting design by My Creative Stitches.  It looks like I used red So Fine thread. From what I can tell I finished this quilt in March of '24.  I will probably give this to the local guild to donate to a veteran.

Are you a fan of Cheryl and Meadow Mist blog? I decided to do her mystery quilt in 2022 for the first time. My friend Sharon and I got together with FaceTime once a month to sew the mystery together. I finally quilted it in July of 24.  I think part of the reason I postponed quilting this one is I was undecided on the quilting design.

I decided to "store" it on the guest bedroom -- there's another quilt under this one.

Here's a closeup of the quilting pattern. It is Sunshine, by Melonie Caldwell and sold at Urban Elementz.  Can't tell which thread I used but it was definitely a white or cream.

It's always fun when I can use fabric from my stash. For this quilt I already had this green with bright colored polka dots and possibly the dark green. I did buy the purply-pink and possibly the background fabric.

I'm linking up with these Linky Parties:
They have lots of wonderful blogs listed for you (and me) to visit.  I've been reading a lot this week and playing computer games rather than spending a lot of time in my studio.  So, it seems like visiting some of these blog posts will be very entertaining this weekend. I hope you do some blog hopping too.

Every year I drop my finished spools in a basket to see how many I use during the year.  Here's the photo from this year's spool usage.

I've been keeping track of my spool usage since 2012.  My highest spool usage was 30 and it happened in 2014 and 2017. (My guess is I was embroidering a lot and used a lot of spools of embroidery thread!) I'm happy with the 20 spools for this year. My lowest number was 7 in 2016. I don't know what happened that year. Maybe I started buying cones for my domestic machine along with the long arm.

That's it for me tonight. We've got more snow coming in over night but hopefully it won't be more than 2" or so.  The temperatures have been staying near or below  freezing since the snowstorm on Monday.  Hopefully we'll see some temps above freezing so the snow will begin to melt.  I'll be spending the weekend in the studio in hopes of making all my goals this week.

Finishes From Spring! Oh My

After finishing my last quilt of 2024 this morning I decided it was time to figure out how many quilts I made this year and whether I actually posted any pictures of them. EEK! I haven't posted all that many pictures of finished quilts.  So today I'm posting 3 of them in the attempt to get pictures of all my finishes posted in the next few weeks.

First up is Sea Creatures. The name comes from the Hoffman fabric -- it has sea creatures on it. (Original aren't I?) Thanks to my friend Gail for gifting me the fabric.  It is hard to see the the animals.  (Notice the azaleas blooming away -- I took the picture a while ago!)

I really like 3 yard quilts. This pattern is from Fabric Cafe's book Quick As A Wink 3-Yard Quilts. The quilting design is Fast and Easy Swirls from My Creative Stitches.

Next is Knuffle Bunny.  The main fabric is based on the illustrations of Mo Willems, who wrote and illustrated the book, Knuffle Bunny.  It's a great picture book for toddlers and primary graders.

I used a Villa Rose Design card called Baby Goose. It's a bit smaller than the directions called for but it used all the fabric I had.  It is a great design to highlight the Knuffle Bunny fabric. I used Sugar and Spice quilting design - another My Creative Stitches design.

Last up is a quilt I call Blue Flowers. Except it dawned on me when I look at the fabric the flowers are yellow on blue fabric.  Oh well. I'm not very creative naming my quilts!

This quilt is Stepping Up Quilt also by Fabric Cafe. You can download this pattern on your computer.  If you visit Fabric Cafe online be sure to check out their free patterns. Right now there are several patterns available. Generally the patterns are pretty fast to make too. I've been using them to make kits. Then I can grab and sew when I take my Featherweight on the road -- sew ins and retreats.

This quilting pattern is called Rhapsody-leaf. It is also by My Creative Stitches.

I have more than 15 finished quilts that I've forgotten to post pictures of this year. So I'll be trying to post them over the next week or two.  My next posting should be on Friday.

I'm linking up with Wednesday Wait Loss and Put Your Foot Down when they become available. Stop by these blogs to see what people are doing this week. ** Alycia suggested linking up at Quilty Girl. So I did! Enjoy the parties.

Finally Some Finishes!

I don't know why but I tend to forget to show finished quilts.  I know I share the tops as I'm making them.  So I decided to blog on a rare Friday and show two finished quilts and my fabric use statistics. (I've been neglecting those numbers!)

First up is a quilt I think I called Baby Buggy.  I donated this one to Country Piecemakers to give to one of their charities when I was at their October retreat.

When I realized I didn't have a photo of this finished quilt I snapped a couple of pictures of it in the sewing area.  Unfortunately, the lighting wasn't fabulous. This quilt is a smaller version of Fabric Cafe's Boxes and Bows 3 yard quilt pattern.  Did you know the Fabric Cafe has free digital patterns?  They change out which patterns are free during the year.  I make a point to check for their freebies every month.  I made this a bit smaller. I used the left over fabric to make another baby quilt.  If you remember, this is the fabric that is actually baby carriages, or really a pram that some people first think are peacocks.  I know weird, right?  I used Quick and Easy Swirl pattern from My Creative Stitches. It definitely is quick and easy.

Next up is My Patriotic Lone Star Quilt.  I'm pretty sure the pattern Big Block Lone Star Quilt© written by Debby Kratovil. (You can buy a digital copy at Debby's shop on Etsy.) I made the quilt quite a while ago but I didn't want to quilt in on the long arm.  I wanted to do mostly stitch in the ditch and designs that are easy to do with my walking foot.  When I got my new sewing machine I decided it was time to give it a try.

I stitched in the ditch around all the diamonds.  Then I using masking tape as a guide I stitched some boxes and triangles. Sharon had suggested I stitch some free hand stars in the border but I decided to take an easier route. I stitched some more triangles instead.  I used So Fine Red and Beige depending on what color I was quilting on.  I am so happy I've finished this one. It will fit perfectly above the fire place during Veterans Day and July 4th.

I've been trying to catch up on fabric I've used or acquired for the last 4 months or so.  I think the last report I gave was in August for June and July.  Except, July was wrong. Here's the correct info for July, and August, and September.  I've done a terrific job of using fabric even though I brought in 19 yards from an estate sale in Aug.  I don't count fabric used until a quilt is finished which means I've got a lot of fabric hanging around as tops that can't be counted as used! Here are the numbers for 3 months, July through September.

It is great to realize I'm still using more fabric than I'm bringing in.  Right now it's running around 40 yards.  I've been doing this for years but I don't think I've had such a good year in using more fabric than I'm bringing in.

My plan is to continue to post finished quilts on Fridays.  I'll have to see how many more I need to share.  So I hope you'll join me to see the finishes instead of always seeing fabric become tops. I'm linking up with Needle and Thread Thursday, Beauties Pageant, Finished or Not Fridaysand Off the Wall. I'm looking forward to doing some serious blog surfing this weekend. I hope your join me.

Monday Meanderings 4 - 22 - 2024

It was a light week for me sewing but not for reading.  If you've read my blog for long you know I'm a big reader and I generally read with the Kindle app.  I read books every day and Kindle keeps track of my days read.  Unfortunately, on April 7 I was reading a book that was only available on Libby and I forgot to read my other book on Kindle.  So after a 720 day reading streak, I missed a day and my number went back to 0.  It's been 13 days.  But I am going to keep track on my own so I figure I've read for 734 days.  I'm hoping to keep it up until I hit 2 full years... or maybe longer. I do enjoy reading.

Now on to my goals.  I did pretty well this week although my list wasn't huge.

4/15/24

✅ Sew label on Spider Web quilt — done.

✅ Make the rest of the pinwheel blocks and sew them together — blocks made but not sewn together, I'll be sashing them.

✅ Catch up on some reading — finished 4 books this week!

✅ Plan top with older bow tie blocks — planned and cut out several blocks.

Knit another hat — finished two.

I laid out my existing bow tie blocks (these are not the blocks I'm making for the RSC this year.) I've decided I want to set it 7 x 10 so I'll have to make 31 more blocks.  I've got about 10 ready to sew and will be choosing fabric and cutting it over the next week or two. The picture was taken of the blocks just put up with not much thought to colors and patterns.

Below are the pinwheel blocks.  I need to decide where to place each block and then get on with cutting and sewing the sashing and corner stones. I realized I didn't have all the blocks on the design wall when I took this picture. I think I have 4 more... I'll have to check this week.  The blocks are 10" finished.

On to my goals for this week.

4/22/24

Quilt customer quilt

Sew sashing on pinwheels, sew top together

Work on bow tie blocks

Keep knitting hats

Baste my patriotic quilt to be quilted (later) on the domestic machine

I've finished a few quilts this year and have just now gotten pictures.  Here's Old Zig Zag finished. (Hum, did I put a label on it?  Might need to check that.)

These are half square triangles that I made years ago...in fact I have no idea when I sewed them. I'm guessing I used them for leader enders and eventually put them into the quilt top.  It spent a few years in a plastic container that said 'tops to be quilted.' I was checking out the bin earlier this year and decided it needed to be quilted.  I added a very dark navy border to stop the motion. I used a blue backing and used the leftovers to bind it.

The quilting pattern is Random Clams.  Although evidently I didn't pay attention how it was being held so the quilting design is upside down. I used So Fine thread.

15 Minutes to Stitch

W/ending 4/21/24 (112)

  • 15 minute days/week = 7/7 days
  • 15 minute days/April =21/21 days
  • 15 minute days/2024 = 105/112 days
  • Success rate = 93.75%
I'm happy that I've been able to spend at least 15 minutes every day stitching or organizing my stitching.  Saturday and Sunday I spent a bit of time cutting up some of the scraps that are taking up space on my 2nd cutting area.  Although I've kept at it I still have more to do.  But I like being able to see and use the 2nd cutting area.

On to Costa Rica happenings.  On our third day at Jaco we were going to leave the beach area and go to the mountains.  Except, first we were going to go Zip Lining!! I had spent quite a bit of time talking to a friend who had done it and also talked to my daughter about it.  I decided I could do it if I was one of the first few to go. No waiting until the end and then backing out!  The whole family went from 7 years old to the 73 year old grammy.

Me with my two oldest grands. It took a while to get the harness on and the helmet.  But eventually all 10 of us were ready.

Have I ever mentioned I don't like aerial trams? No riding ski lifts for me. I once refused to ride with my teen age kids in a tram because I thought they would rock it and scare me.  I went with the tour guide who wasn't interested in rocking. Plus, I'm not really fond of heights -- no walking up lighthouses or the Washington Monument.  So of course, the first thing we had to do is go up the mountain on an aerial tram. Sigh. No rocking but the oldest grand kept teasing me about every stop, every tower we passed, etc.  But surprisingly I wasn't all that nervous or scared. It was smooth and not a bad ride except we kept going up and up.

Four grands, one daughter and Grammy.  The kids would be going first  with an adult going right afterwards.  Teddy, 7, was not quite heavy enough so a few times he had one of the workers go with him so he didn't get stuck on the wire.  But everyone else went solo.

Not the most flattering picture but proof that I definitely went zip lining. Hum, I was suppose to be holding my legs up and my feet crossed.  I guess I did't always remember.  I should have been able to zip facing forward but most times I got turned around and tried desperately to turn the cable (or the hook?) around so I was headed forward.  On the other hand it was neat to see where I had been. And, once we could look out and see the Pacific Ocean in the distance.

Here we all are 3/4s of the way through the zip lining.  There were 9 platforms.  At the 7th or 8th one we had to hike down the mountain with the help of "stairs" made from tires.  Um, not all that helpful. Lucky for me Kevin stayed with me and I held on -- I just didn't want to fall and roll down the mountain!  The adults from left to right: Kevin, Aimee, Bonnie, Pat, Jenny and Brian. The kids, l to r, Teddy, Ellie, Natalie and Sophie.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to use this photo on my Christmas cards this year. I need to brag!

I am so proud of myself for going and I actually enjoyed it but I was totally worn out when done.  I could go again some day but I don't think I will.  This week I was thinking of my grandparents and realized there was no way any of them would have gone zip lining at 73! Heck, neither would my parents.  It was a memorable day.

Afterwards we went back to the house to pick up our luggage and we all drove to Monteverde.  Each family had a car and we didn't coordinate our departures nor our lunch.  That's it for the 3rd day of our trip.  I'll share some more next Monday.  Although, honestly, the most exciting day was the zip lining!

I'm linking with Oh Scrap, Life in Pieces, Design Wall Monday and Monday Musings.  Take a tour of quilting blogs starting at these Linky parties.

Say Hello to Rainbow Parade!

Remember all that secret sewing I was doing a week or so ago?  It's time to unveil it.  And, boy-howdy! I'm excited about it. I had so much fun working on this quilt. It currently is hanging with pride in the entry way of our house.

Isn't it gorgeous? (Ok I'm am totally biased but I love it.) The design is by Preeti Harris who blogs at Sew Preeti Quilts. She called me to see if I would test a pattern and share it with the world through my blog. Well why not. I've made several tops that she has designed so I knew it would be well written. (See Synergy I tested for her in April 2022 here.)

When I first saw the pattern I realized it was a perfect pattern to use some fabric I had hand dyed years ago. It was, with one little issue... I didn't trust it not to bleed. And, I was right. So every fabric had a long, leisurely bath in my bathroom sink. Several times.  Eventually they all were dry and  ready to be ironed and find a place in the quilt. You might notice what Preeti designed was bigger and used more colors than mine. I worked with a very limited collection of fabrics and many were barely half yard pieces. So I improvised. And, this pattern definitely is easy to improvise.

I chose a light silver grey Kona solid. I wanted the colors to be the main focus.

I had a hard time deciding which quilting pattern I would use on my Rainbow Parade.  Finally, it dawned on me that I didn't want the quilting to take precedence over the wonderful design and colors. I used a  stipple pattern that was included with my robotics.  It was perfect for letting the design and colors shine.

A few more thoughts on this pattern -- it is easy to make. The blocks are 13" finished so you don't need lots to have a decent size quilt. Mine is about 44.5" x 57" and is set 3 x 4.  The pattern is set 4 x 5 and measures 57" x 70".

Preeti did a great job with detailing what you need to make this rainbow quilt. She wrote it so each color is repeated in the next diagonal row. My lack of lots of fabric made it impossible for me to do it that way. But, it worked out just fine any way. Talk about versatile!

I would like to make it again using a print fabric where the darker fabric is in my version. I make a lot of kid centric quilts and this pattern could highlight a cute novelty fabric really well. I could use one color for all of the light parts or use a rainbow of fabrics again. I could also see this as a patriotic fabric using the same concepts as for the novelty fabric.

Have you started thinking about what fabric you want to use to make this pattern?  Rainbow Parade is in Preeti's Etsy shop now. And, even better, it will be 20% off until March 12. Check it out here: https://sewpreetiquilts.etsy.com/listing/1690533725/rainbow-parade-quilt-pattern-beginner

Would you like to win a digital copy of this pattern?  One lucky commenter will win. Make sure you add an email address if you don't have it attached to your name.

More accurate colors

Would you like some hand dyes to play with yourself?  I'm offering a give away of 4 fat quarters of fabric I hand dyed. I promise they will all have a spa day in my bathroom sink until the dye quits rinsing out. Limited to the US. One comment will get you a chance at both the hand dye and the Rainbow Parade pattern. Again, make sure your email is attached to your name.

Here are the hand dyes I'll be sending out. Hum, it isn't smart to try to take pictures in the middle of the night and expect the colors to come out correctly.  The top one is a slightly blue green. The second one is actually what I'd call flamingo pink. The next one is a medium blue - not a grey blue. And the last is mauve.  (I might have purchased that piece as it isn't the same greige goods.)  Update -- the bigger picture is more accurate but I think the colors are a bit brighter. I left the night picture in just to show the contrast.

The other thing that happened to my great surprise and happiness is I had a leftover backing that worked well with the rainbow concept. I actually had loaded this backing and was going to put another top on it when I realized it would work for Rainbow Parade. Kismet!

Want to see more versions of Rainbow Parade? Preeti lined up an international group of quilters to help her out.  Check out these blogs to see more Rainbow Parade quilts.

I'll be linking with the following Linky parties (when they come on line.)

One last look at my Rainbow Parade.

Hum...all through making this quilt I thought of the red/pink block as being the top.  And here I hung this one upside down! (Or not!)

A Finish or Two!

Between Christmas and now I've quilted 4 quilts.  Today I'm showing two of them. The third one hasn't been bound yet. Um, yes it has I just forgot to take pictures! So it will wait.  The fourth one hasn't been bound yet!

First up Snoopy and Charlie Brown.  I found the Charlie and Snoopy squares in a box marked squares (!) a few months ago.  I don't remember how or where I got them but it was time to put them to use.   I found some red and blue 4 patches and the fabric that went with them to help make the quilt. I took the supplies to the October retreat and put it together there. Want to see some of the steps in getting this one to a quilt?  Check out these posts: 10/2 and 10/9.  Here it is just coming off the long arm.

The quilting pattern is Rhapsody Leaf by My Creative Stitches. The design also comes with puppy paws which you'll see later this month.

Next up is Coffee Break.  I like to let a fun fabric do the hard work of making a great quilt.  And this crazy coffee fabric fit that bill. So I added some "loud" fabric and came up with this one.

I used a computerized stipple called Classic Stipple by Apricot Moon.  The picture below shows a little closeup of the quilt and the bird house Pat made last summer. We haven't noticed any birds living in it yet.  Hopefully we'll have some this coming spring and summer.

This quilt will also be donated through Virginia Star Quilt Guild but it will be going to our local senior center.

When we took these pictures this afternoon I forgot the third quilt I've finished.  So one of these days I'll get a picture of it and share. And, another quilt is on the long arm.  I have 9 or 10 quilts lined up with backing so there will be a lot more finishes over the next few months.  But I keep making new tops so there will be more than those finished this year.

Please visit these Linky parties to see what quilters from around the world are working on now.
Beauties Pageant

We are hoping to be able to celebrate Christmas with our son's family Saturday.  We'll see whether we can as both he and I have been exposed to Covid this week. I tested negative on Thursday and I'll test again Saturday morning.  Fun times, eh?

I realized that I failed to post my Mysteries and Stitch Alongs.  I'll try to get that finished on Sunday.  There are quite a few good opportunities if you are looking for something new to make.

Monday Meanderings 5 - 8 2023

I have had a great week. Pat and I went down to Nags Head to take care of some work around our beach house before the summer begins.  We've had a great spring with rentals and the summer and fall seem to be gearing up to continue apace.

One thing I generally bring down is my trusty featherweight and too many projects to get done.  This time I finished two tops and made several different blocks. I did have another group of Happy Blocks I could have put together but didn't get to it. I also brought down my most recent finish for a photo shoot. But before I show those let's look at my goal list from last week.

5/1/23

✅Make extra Happy Blocks — 6 done

✅Sew one group of Happy Blocks into quilt top — top done

✅Sew grape top together - made blocks and put top together

Make some Flower Song blocks — 3 more made

This was the last project I worked on.  I was happy to get 3 more blocks made.  Luckily I have quite a few additional blocks cut out and sewn into half square triangles.  I'm going to try to continue working on this project over the next few weeks.

Here's my goals for this coming week.

5/8/23

Start working on APQ’s UFO challenge - mine is a small wall hanging that needs a border, quilting and binding

Make various blocks to donate

Continue to make Flower Song Blocks

Start fusing and trimming tee shirts for a quilt

Before the end of April I finished another small quilt.  I decided to take it on our trip so I could get some glamor pictures of it.  Pat and I went over to Roanoke Island's Festival Park.  Roanoke Island is famous as the site of the first attempted settlement from England in America.  The first English child was born in the settlement in 1587.  Unfortunately the settlement vanished and no one knows what happened to the people living there. You can read a bit about here and here

It was a beautiful sunny day with a bit of wind.  As usual, I took way too many photos and chose only a few to share.

Pat fighting the wind.

Using my 9" Accuquilt Cube I was able to make a 14" unfinished block. The quilt is approximately 41" square.  You can make this block using any cube using shapes 1,3, and 9.  The block will be larger than your cube size. (Basically it will be about 3 times the size of your shape 1 excluding the seam allowances.)

There was this interesting stage that also let you enjoy the water view.

On a tree!

On our back deck.  The backing fabric is a wide back from Connecting Threads called Cobblestone in Light Honeysuckle. I did not use it in the top but I did use it to bind the quilt.

I have way too many tops to turn into quilts -- I'm still waiting for my long arm to come back. Once that happens I'll be spending more time getting tops finished.  I've run out of the plastic hangers I use to keep them neat.

It's time to share my favorite Linky parties. I hope you can use one of these as a jumping off source to see a whole lot of blogs chock full of great ideas!
