A Fast Quilt for Charity!

I'm happy to be making quilts for Sarah's Hands 2 Help 2023. And, once again, writing a blog to support Sarah's efforts and give you some ideas of what you can make.

As I was thinking about what I might write about 2 things happened in my life. One was the APQ UFO Challenge for April was #4 which for me was a set of huge flying geese.  Yep, huge - 8.5" by 16.5". I had made them for a block drawing for a retreat years ago and they were wrong. No, size was fine, I just didn't notice it said use batik fabric.  I probably have another group that I won that were batiks but that's for another day.  It was time to do something with them.

My friend Sharon had cut hers into smaller half square triangles and made some other blocks from them. Hum, could I do that too?  I had two goals -- use the blocks and make a fairly big quilt.  Well, big blocks make big quilts faster. So I trimmed these blocks into 6.5" half square triangles.  I was able to make one 12.5" pinwheel block from each set of two. (I didn't use the white flowers for this project as they didn't go well with the other two.)

Here's how I cut them up.  I saved the two strips from each triangle for another day. (I see a string quilt in my future.) Then all that was left was to sew the 4 - 6" blocks together. Easy peasy to make a simple block.

To make a big quilt I needed a lot more blocks. Another benefit of making the blocks 6.5" was I have an AccuQuilt die for that size half square triangle. I started pulling fabrics that were mostly light and darks to go with the existing pinwheel blocks.  And, next thing I know I'm cutting triangles and then I'm sewing them together. Four 6.5" HSTs make a 12" finished block.  At first I thought of this as my "squirrel" project, something that was interrupting my weekly goal lists.  Eventually I figured out it wasn't really a squirrel project because it was listed as "use the big flying geese blocks." A week and a half later I have a finished top.

My 12.5" blocks made up quickly, made a dent in several different colors of fabric and is a fairly large quilt.  I set the blocks 4 x 5 which makes the quilt approximately 48" x 60".  I have to admit I was tickled that I could get this top made in less than 2 weeks. Quilting is another matter as my long arm is still out for repair.

Remember I mentioned two things happened? The other was my guild was collecting 12.5" blocks to use for charity quilts. Off to the orphan block box  I went.  And I found several blocks I could pass on. (Check out the picture of 4 blocks from last week's blog.  The two on the left were orphans.)

And, look what else I found:

What a great idea -- another fast, easy way to make a 12" block -- made from four 6.5" blocks sewn into the 12.5" block. I'm pretty sure I'll be making some more batik bow tie blocks to be able to put this block into a quilt.  I also found a bunch of other bowtie blocks. So, shouldn't I make some more to go with them? Of course!

Here's what you need to make one 6" finished bowtie. 2 - 3.5" squares of light fabric, 2 - 3.5" squares of medium or dark fabric, and 2 - 2" squares of the same medium or dark. Draw a diagonal line down the center of the 2" squares.

Place a 2" square on a corner of each of the light squares.  Sew on the diagonal line on both squares. Trim the excess fabric leaving a quarter inch seam.  Then flip the triangle over and iron.  I tend to trim up the light triangles after flipping just to make sure they stay at 3.5".

Lay out the blocks to form the bowtie.

Sew a purple square to the white with the purple triangle.

Sew the two halves together. Voila! You have one quarter of a 12" finished bow tie made.  Make three more. These blocks are great for using up smaller pieces of fabrics and are really fast to sew.

While I was trying to decide on which blocks I would make as 12" blocks I came across this nice web site for blocks. Many times 12" blocks are made from 6" blocks.  You can find various size blocks here with good directions. Here's the link for a 6" finished Pinwheel block. Do you want to print the directions?   Yes, there are a lot of ads but look for the note about how to print (or save) the information without having a lot of ads. It's a separate site but it drops the ads for you and allows you to drop out some of the instructions or pictures if you don't really need them.

Poke around the web site and you'll find all sorts of interesting info. They even have a section on patriotic quilt patterns.

Another great web site with LOTS of quilt pattern is Quilter's Cache. As stated on the main page this site has "a gazillion patterns." You can spend days picking and making blocks from their directions. Find the drop down menu on the main page and choose "Quilt Blocks Galore." Then you can look at them either by name or by size. In some ways this is a bit clunky but oh the number of standard blocks and original blocks is amazing.

Here are a few I think would be fairly easy to make: A Dandy, Antique Tile,  Arrowhead Puzzle, Box Kite, Buckeye Beauty, Calico Puzzle and Churn Dash.  Do you get it?  I gave up after "ch" titles because I had way more than I needed to share!

As you plan your next charity quilt or a quilt for your family, consider using  an easy 12" block. A 3 x 3 setting will yield a 36" square quilt. That 36" square quilt would make a cute baby quilt.  A 3 x 4 block setting would yield a 36 x 48" quilt, a perfect size for a toddler or elementary age child. The 4 x 5 set makes a great lap quilt for teenagers, seniors and most anyone.  And, think how much easier an easy 12" block would make a twin, queen or king quilt!

If you are trying to make quilt tops quickly pick a 12" block that is easy to make and go to town!

I'm linking to these parties.  I hope you have some spare time to surf the web! My normal Monday Meanderings will be posted Tuesday, hopefully.

Hands 2 Help Quilt Challenge

Here are the 5 quilts I sent to Cool Kids Clubhouse in North Carolina. You can read more about them at this post. If you have other quilts ready to be sent out to a charity please consider sending them to Cool Kids Clubhouse. The address is on the post listed above.  It supports pediatric cancer patients in North Carolina and some adjacent areas.

The first three all have dogs in them.  Hum, I didn't realize I was sending so many dog quilts!  What can I say, I like dogs.  And, I guess I have a lot of dog fabric too.

Oops -- there are dogs in this Happy Quilt too.

And for a little difference -- this quilt has a bunny or two in it.

The center block has some of the bunny fabric in it.

I'm happy to say that all 5 were put in the mail yesterday.  Here's hoping they go to children who will love them during their treatments.

You can see other quilts that were made and donated in the name of Hands 2 Help at this Linky party at Academic Quilter.

Join me in surfing these blogs to see what quilts have been made and sent to the various charities in America.

A SPECIAL REQUEST!

Are you participating in Hands2Help 2022?  Are you looking for places to donate that aren't on the other side of the country from you?  I had asked Sarah last year to look into having one or two of the wonderful charities on the East Coast included on her list.  I found 2 and checked them out and passed on the info to Sarah.  Unfortunately, she was unable to run Hands 2 Help this year so no new locations were added. But the wonderful Mari at Academic Quilter took over for Sarah. You can still sign up to participate in Hands2Help by visiting The Academic Quilter. General information is available here

Since I had checked them out, I wanted to let you know about one of them, Cool Kids Campaign in North Carolina.  "Our mission is devoted to improving the quality of life for pediatric oncology patients, survivors and their families by focusing on the academic, social and emotional needs brought on by a cancer diagnosis." They serve pediatric oncology patients in North Carolina and part of South Carolina.

They would be thrilled to receive quilts to pass on to their patients. The hospitals they work with serve patients from babies through 18 years of age. (Some hospitals continue to treat patients through the age 21.)  They would love quilts from baby size to twin bed size. Do you have some kids quilts you would like to give to a good cause?  This may be a perfect fit. Or a perfect reason to use some of that cute kid fabric you have in your stash.

Does this sound like a cause you would love to support with quilts?  Please check out their web page at Cool Kids Campaign.  This is the website for both the NC Clubhouse and the Maryland Clubhouse. My guild and other guilds in Maryland do a fantastic job of providing quilts for them so let's send our quilts to NC Cool Kids Clubhouse.

Do you have some ready to send right now?  Here's the mailing info.  Please let them know you are supporting them through Hands2Help. (And head back to AcademicQuilter.blogspot.com to fill out the form at the end of the H2H to help count how many quilts have been given and to whom.   I'd love to see some that you send so I can share them with my readers too. Please send me a note and a picture it you want to.  Here's the address and contact.

Did you notice I said I had checked out two locations?  The other one I had looked at has closed.  Now I'm working with International Women's Democracy Center's Welcome Refugees program to find locations where we could send quilts. I hope to have information on that in the next week or so.  I'll publish the information when I find out who can get quilts to refugees. I know Afghanistan refugees are being settled in the Mid-Atlantic area.

I hope you will join me in supporting Cool Kids and refugee group once I find the contact information.

Oops!  I forgot the Linky parties! (I'll get the rest linked tomorrow.)

No Finish But . . .

I did get the yellow squares cut out to put with the Chunky Churn Dash blocks.  Nothing sewn together yet but there are still 2 more sewing days before I do my next goal post!  (Hope springs eternal!)

Hum, I see a few blocks I want to move around to better balance color but this is the basic plan.  Maybe it'll get done this weekend.

I've been pretty involved with reading books over the last week or so (which also might explain why I haven't finished a quilt yet.)  For some reason every half the books I had on hold started showing up -- about one every other day.  I love reading on my Kindle but there was no way I could keep up. I was able to skip my turn and not really lose my place in line for a couple of the books.  No doubt in two weeks or so they will start showing up again.  Sigh.

This is a short post today.  I'm linking up to the weekend parties so take a look at these blogs to see what is going on! Confessions of a Fabric Addict, Alycia Quilts, and From Bolt to Beauty.  You know the drill -- check out what folks are making across the internet.  You can always add it to your someday-I'm-going-to-make list!

Have you checked out Hands 2 Help 2021?  It's a great opportunity to make some quilts and give them to good causes.  Sarah has been doing this yearly since 2011.  She says nearly 3000 comfort quilts have been made and shared.  Do you want to join in this year?  If you sign up before the end of Sat., March 20th you'll be eligible for some prizes.  Click on my link on the right to get directly to the H2H page with all sorts of information. Hope you join in.

Hands 2 Help

Have you been making quilts for Hands 2 Help?  Sarah, who blogs at Confessions of a Fabric Addict, sponsors Hands 2 Help each year.  This year is going to be her biggest year ever.  I've been supporting this program for several years.  Sometimes I make new quilts.  But this year, I did finish one quilt but also chose 2 other quilts I've made in the past.

Here are the quilts I sent to Quilts of Compassion in Ohio today.

Baby Girl Happy Block Quilt
Fox Quilt

And a really old Mystery Quilt.
This is a short blog to make sure I get it posted on Confessions of a Fabric Addict before the linky party closes.

Hands 2 Help and Goals

Yep, I'm not getting my normal Monday morning blog done this week.  And, as you can tell it didn't come out Tuesday or Wednesday.  My retreat was awesome but I had a heck of a cold and that wasn't so much fun. I've spent the last three days lazing around.  I'm somewhat better so it's time to post my quilts heading out to the Sarah's selected charities. I showed both of these quilts earlier but wanted to get something out and I needed to link with Sarah's Hands 2 Help.

First is the quilt going to Carolina Hurricane Quilt Project.  It's a queen size.  I've had it in my to be quilted closet for a while so I am thrilled it is done and going somewhere it can be used and enjoyed.
Next up is a little quilt for Jack's Basket.  The inner "snowflake" block was made by a quilter who died before she could finish it.  What better way to remember her than by using her block as the beginning of a quilt.  It took me a long time to get the right combination of borders to make the quilt look wonderful but I'm so glad I persisted.  And, I found the perfect flannel backing fabric but I have no idea of when or where I acquired it.  Oh well.  Hopefully some little one will love to snuggle up with this quilt.
I had hoped to make a few more quilts for Jack's Basket but this cold has drained all of my energy.  One hint is I didn't even blog this week.  I'm hoping I'll be energized soon and can share all my work I did at retreat.  My plan of bringing easy kits really worked well.

I'm linking up with Sarah's Hands 2 Help final link up and Needle and Thread Thursday.

Finishes -- YEA!

I've been working on finishing several quilts to send them off for Hands 2 Help.  Here are the quilts done so far.

First up is a mystery quilt I started several years ago.  It's been sitting in my quilt closet waiting to be quilted.  My thought is a quilt top takes up less room than a quilted quilt. And, I didn't need another queen size quilt. Heck, I've even had the wide back for this quilt for several years.  This one will be going to Carolina Hurricane Project.  I'm sure someone will be able to use this queen-size quilt. You can click on it to see an enlarged version that shows off the lovely quilting texture.
The quilting pattern is Ariana by Donna Kleinke. You can find it at One Song Needle Arts.  This particular pattern is a great design to give some soft curves to a quilt. My thread is So Fine #402, a light beige.  The quilt finished approximately 81" x 105".  It was so big I actually took off the original outside and inside borders and just used a 3 1/2" finished border. It just barely fit on the wide back I had bought for it.  The only place I could get a picture of the whole thing was having Pat hold it over the side of the deck.

Here it is nestled between two of our gorgeous azaleas.  (I love including some of out garden in these quilt pictures.)

My next quilt will be going to Jack's Basket. The inside block was part of a stash of fabric from a former member of the local quilt guild.  I like to use these UFOs when it is possible and I thought her snowflake block would be great to make up into a 36" square.  Little did I know it would take me forever to decide what to do to make it look great.  I spent way too many hours on it but I love the finished quilt.
I auditioned all sorts of fabric and designs to go with the center.  Although it isn't obvious in the picture the first round is a light grey followed by some penguins on a blue background.  Then a black and white houndstooth followed by a solid royal blue Kona.  I'm hoping some family loves this quilt.  If I had any little babies coming in my family I would definitely keep it!

Check out this great backing.  I don't have a lot of large hunks of fabric.  I'd scanned all of my fabric shelves trying to find something to use as the back.  Nothing seemed to work.  *Light bulb moment!* I remembered a box of flannel fabrics in my quilt closet.  I was totally surprised when I found this lovely blue flannel in the box.  I have no idea when, where or why I added it to my collection.  But, I was just so tickled with it for this quilt.

I'm hoping to get one or two more quilts done for Jack's Basket.  I've gone through some of my blocks that are looking for homes.  I found 2 sets of blocks that I can definitely make into 36" quilts. Each block set has been kitted up with additional fabric and a design so that I can work on them at retreat. I'll look for backings before I go so I can throw them on Ruthie right after I get back.

Since Mother's Day is almost upon us I thought I would share this lovely hydrangea my son and his family sent me.  I'm just tickled with it.  It will be lovely in the house for a while and then I will plant it in the backyard.  We've got several hydrangea plants in one section.  This will be close to them but more visible from the back.
Today I'm connecting with Sarah's Hands2Help link up. Scroll down to the end of the blog to find the linky party.  I'm also linking up with Needle and Thread Thursday and Finish or Not Friday.  I'm going to spend a little time checking out these linky parties to see what folks are up to these days. Won't you join me?

Odd ball question:  Have you noticed more people are using the Captcha that makes you try to identify similar pictures?  I hate those things!  You'd think I'd be able to tell which pictures have stop lights in them... but unfortunately sometimes I don't get it right.  Talk about frustrating!

Instead of using Captchas I set my blog to accept any comments for 5 days.  After that comments are moderated, ie, I have to approve them before they show up. I am pretty diligent on removing comments that are questionable such as advertisements and links to other pages that I don't trust.  I'm also careful of comments that are not in English.  Sorry, I just don't trust something I can't read and know that it is legitimate.

I'm looking forward to a quilty weekend.  I have a quilt on Ruthie waiting to be quilted.  Hopefully I'll get it done Saturday and still have time to work on another quilt for H2H.

Happy Quilting All!  Bonnie

Stashbusting Report Jan & RSC Progress

Somehow I actually used more fabric than I brought in during January.  Part of it was a pillowcase I made late in the month.  It's not looking as good for February.  Plus the Mid Atlantic Quilt show is at the end of the month and there will be lots of wonderful fabrics available at the various vendors.

Next up is the upcoming Hands 2 Help 2019.  You can check out all the info about this year's Hands 2 Help by clicking on the button above or on my side bar. Sarah's got a great line up of charities across the country.  Do you have a quilt still looking for a home?  Then review Sarah's charities to see where your quilt will fit the best.  Or, how about planning and making a quilt for a specific charity.

Sign ups with a chance for a prize starts 3/10 through 3/16.  You can click the link above or the one on the sidebar to take you to Sarah's H2H main page which includes the sign up form.

I've finally taken some pictures of the various blocks I'm making for this year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge. First up Propeller Block (block instructions available here. Layout ideas are in the next post on that blog.)

Next up is a block called Bright Blocks.  I used a 3.5" unfinished block. (9" finished block.) Although the original pattern I found used a 4.5" unfinished block. (12" finished block.) I'm making just one of each color.  I'll probably add another color so I can set this 3 x 4. Seems like a perfect baby quilt when done.

And my last set of "blocks" comes from Stash Statement book by Kelly Young. You can check it out on Kelly's blog My Quilt Infatuation. Here's the quilt I plan on making on the left.  On the right some of my improv pieces.

I probably overdid the reds.  I'm still working on the yellows.  In the next few weeks I plan to buy a background fabric so I can actually make a row each month.  By the end of the year I'll have a finished quilt top.  I haven't decided if I'm going to make more than 1 row for each color.  Time will tell.

I'm linking up with some parties today: Can I Get a Whoop, Whoop? and Scrap Happy Saturday.  (I'll link that up on Saturday.)

That's it from me. I need to post this and then link to Whoop, Whoop before my battery dies.  14% left... can I do it?

Hands 2 Help Finish

Here are the two quilts I will be sending to Little Lambs for Kids Foundation.  Yes, I am extremely late based on when Sarah called for sending and posting and the like.  But, but... ok, I can get ridiculously behind on things.  Truth told I was probably finished with one of the quilts in time and the other probably only needed it's binding.  But I know the Little Lambs will appreciate these quilts whenever they receive them.

First up is the one I made from opportunity blocks.  You can read about moving these blocks from just a group of blocks I won at a guild meeting to becoming a quilt in this guest post on Sarah's blog Confessions of a Fabric Addict.

Here's the finished quilt out in the sunshine.  (That was in short supply for much of this spring....)

This was quilted with a design called Mermaid Fingers.  I love using Mermaid Fingers and it really worked well on this quilt.

I showed the other quilt earlier.  But here's the finished Looney Tunes quilt again. You can read about it here.

In honor of Father's Day I thought I would share some wood toys that Pat has been making.  Theo got one for Christmas -- a dump truck. (Sorry I couldn't find a picture.)   However, I'm pretty sure Kevin wasn't going to let him play with it for a while.  Here are a front loader and a truck.

He has as much fun making these as I do making my quilts.  It's nice to have a hobby.  One of these days I'll show what he's made for my quilting time!

I'm linking up with Oh Scrap and Can I Get a Whoop, Whoop? Enjoy some down time and check out what folks are sharing on these linky parties.

Monday Meandering 5 - 21 -2018

Retreat is over. Exhaustion has hit.  A great amount of sewing has been done.  Lots of fellowship with friends I don't see all that often has taken place.  This post will mostly be a few pictures of what I worked on and my goals for this week. I'm pooped!
This top was started at the beach house last weekend and finished at retreat.  The Looney Tunes character fabric was 6 fat quarters I received last year at a swap at the October retreat I go to.  It's ready for quilting and binding and YEA, I have a backing fabric for it already. It will go to one of Sarah's charities for Hands 2 Help.

Jamestown Landing saw a lot of blocks being made.  I had most of the units for the blocks made.  Here are 33 of the 42 blocks I need.  I'm pretty sure I have enough of the broken dishes blocks but I will need to make some more of the string blocks before I can finish all of the blocks.  Plus, I need to measure the bed and figure out whether I want another row to make it a bit longer.

I actually started another small quilt but ran out of steam.  It will be easy to finish up quickly.

Here's what happened on the goals this week:
May 14, 2014
RETREAT FUN! Enjoy myself & sew like a demon!
Sing at last concert maybe Couldn't make it.
Finish 2 small quilt tops One finished, one started

And this week I'm planning on taking it easy on the quilting and just relax.

PS I had planned to write a post on my iPad while on retreat.  The photos were taken and watermarked. But when I tried to load the pictures into Blogger I couldn't figure out a way to load them directly from my iPad to the post.  Anyone know how to do that?

Monday Meanderings

A small finish.... yes, it's really small.  But it is done.

I started it at the beginning of April.  You can read about the start here. And the pattern is available here.  It didn't take long to finish. (I really liked that idea!)  I asked Pat to make a different stand for my bunny.  You can see the original one where the patterns are shown at the link above.  Of course, now I need to come up with some more little hangings.  That will give me some small designing experience since I've wanted to design more of my own projects.

I did pretty well on my goals this week although I didn't get 2 pillowcases cut out.  I'll try to do that today so I have them to take with me on retreat.  Yep it's RETREAT WEEK.  Sharon's coming up Wednesday and we're heading off on Thursday morning.  This year we won't make it as early because if we leave really early we'll end up sitting in rush hour traffic.  Bummer. But we'll have plenty of time to sew! I don't think I'm going to do any fabric shopping this year.  It's all about the sewing.

I forgot all about the fact that I was the guest blogger at Confessions of a Fabric Addict on Sunday.  My post was about using a collection of blocks I had won.  Hop on over to read about my process of putting "Opportunity Blocks" together.  Here's the quilt after quilting. (If you click on most of my pictures they will enlarge.)

My goals were mostly achieved.  I didn't get the pillowcases cut out.  On the other hand I did get the quilt above quilted and it wasn't even on my list.  Not a bad trade off.  I've got two more quilts I'd like to get done between now and Thursday but I'm not holding my breath.

May 7, 2018
Hand quilt on Civil War quilt
Work on Jamestown Landing
Cut out 1 more project for retreat
Cut out 2 pillowcases OOPS, didn’t happen

RETREAT FUN!  Enjoy myself and sew like a demon!
Finish 2 small quilt tops
Work on Jamestown Landing
Hand quilt on Civil War quilt
Sing at last concert maybe

Unfortunately, the Retreat Weekend is the same weekend as my neighborhood chorus and the Spotsylvanians' concerts.  I dropped out of the neighborhood chorus but I've gone to all of the Spottsy's rehearsals.  So if Sharon and I get back in time, I plan to sing on Sunday afternoon.

I'm off to cut out some pillowcases!  Before I go, let me remind you that I'll be linking to Oh ScrapMonday Making, Moving It Forward, and Design Wall Monday. I will be spending some time surfing the Internet this week.  You can get so many good ideas!

Hands 2 Help

I'm so close to finishing my Hands 2 Help quilt -- I just need to add the binding which is actually started.  Hopefully I will have it finished Friday afternoon and in the mail no later than Monday.  Today I'm sharing pictures of the whole process.  Some of the pics have been shared before so just keep looking until the end to see the almost finished quilt.
Squares cut, packaged and ready to go to retreat to be sewn.
4 rows of 8 laid out at retreat.  I made a couple of errors sewing the blocks into rows.  At that point I decided to wait to finish this at home.  Once I got home I moved some of the rows around and also added one star.
Quilting is done!  Time for binding.
It's hard to see the quilting here -- click on any of these photos to see a larger picture.  The pattern is Yarn Tangle.  Thread is Teal So Fine by Superior.  Batting is Pellon Natural 100% Cotton with scrim. I used a 104" backing from Connecting Threads.  The navy blue is Kona.

UM, oops!  I didn't bring any paper with me to retreat nor did I bring my pins with the ABC's on them to mark my rows.  So I carefully tore an envelope we were given and wrote numbers for each row with any pen I could find.
Now you see it...
Now you don't! Hum, writing with a Frixon pen on paper that just might be ironed wasn't my best idea.
That's it for me now.  I'm linking up with Confessions of a Fabric Addict, and  Needle and Thread Thursday.SaveSave
