Design Wall Tuesday? April 29, 2014

Yikes!  I am way behind on everything, or so it seems. Here's what I've been working on.
This is the before and after of the disappearing 9 patch star.  I have most of my samples ready for the demo but I'll need to do a little bit more on this one.  I'll do that Wednesday at Sharon's house.
And here's the rail fence star.  I wish I had taken a picture of the row of stars before they got packed away.  I really like how easy this star is to make.  I can see more of these in my future.

I didn't do so well on my goals last week.  Well, yeah.  I wouldn't have been working into the wee hours of the night last night if I had.

Unique Rulers Put to Use

Speaking of unusual rulers...do you ever use the unusual rulers you buy?  In the last year I've used 3 or 4 rulers I had bought but not used.  I used the X Block for a quilt for QOV.  It will be heading to Colorado after the quilt show in Maryland. I really like how this version really sparkles.

I put this triangle ruler into a brown bag project at Country Piecemakers. The bag goes to a different member each month.  Here's the beginning of my sample block that shows the ruler.

Here's are a few finished blocks.  I won't get my project back until August.  Every month I work on someone else's project.  It feels good to use some of these older tools! Of course, I bought a new one at the Hampton Roads quilt show this winter so I'll still have a new ruler to try! Here's a plain and a sewn block. I've asked folks to use the floral print in the middle of each block and to pick a fabric that matches the floral one.

Today Pat and I spent the afternoon seeing Wicked at the old Landmark theater.  It was a great musical.  Good story, dancing and singing.  It's been a long time since we've been to any musical.  The afternoon was capped by dinner at the Tobacco Company.  The building was an old tobacco warehouse that has been restored.  Very nice surroundings and very good food too.  Back to sewing tomorrow.

Happy Quilting All!

Design Wall Monday 4-21-2014

Here's the Throw Me a Curve challenge today. I added some plain squares.   I'm thinking I'll make each of these blocks smaller.  They are currently 6 1/2" which was the only size templates I had.  I've never used these templates yet I've had them for YEARS! Think 10+ years.  I am tickled to actually be using them and surprised at how easy it is to cut out the fabric using a small rotary cutter.  And, the sewing is just as easy.  I may have to do something else with these templates! I would like to get these blocks to a top stage before I have my week in Maryland.  They are due at the Country Piecemaker's May meeting right after I get back from Maryland.

I'm also in the middle of quilting a QOV quilt for Country Piecemakers.  Here it is on Ruthie with a row and a half done. This block works well as a group project.  It is made as a disappearing 9 patch to begin with and then  sew and flip squares are added to make the star points.  We used donated fabric and purchased background fabric.  The blocks need to be cut to size after they are made which is why it works so well for a group!
I will be demonstrating this block at the Faithful Circle Quilters show on Friday, May 2nd.  If you are anywhere near Columbia, Maryland during the show stop in and enjoy.  Nearly 300 quilts will be hung. And there will be vendors, silent auction, $10 and under table and Peddler's table. You can read more about it at the Faithful Circle Quilters web site.

Here's what's been happening with my goals.
