Monday Meanderings 2 - 13 - 2023

Changes are coming . . . but first how did I do on my goals last week?  Not as well as I wanted to but not terrible either.

2/6/23

Make 2 walker bags — nope, didn’t happen

✅Make Spider Web backing - done

✅Quilt Spider Web Quilt — not sure I like it, but I did it. **

Prep binding for Spider Web Quilt — started but not ready yet

✅Work on Feb UFO Challenge blocks

Prep binding for Moose quilt — didn’t do it

** I'm pretty sure I'm going to rip out the quilting as it doesn't look all that good. I tried a spiral with a curvy stitch -- ugh looked awful.  I only did a couple of rounds before I realized it looked terrible. That got ripped out.

Second time I tried organic lines.  I did the whole quilt but in the end it wasn't enough quilting and it looked terrible so glad I didn't make the quilting denser.  I'm putting the quilt in time out for a few weeks.  I'll be having a lot of fun ripping stitches out for a while.  Any suggestions on what I should quilt on the Spider Web quilt?

As an aside -- Ruthie the long arm is still not quite right.  For some reason she is stitching larger stitches when she is working from right to left or vice versa. Stitches going up and down are close to normal.  Still waiting to hear what must be done to fix this.  Sigh.

Here's what's happening this week.

2/13/2023

Make last 3 blocks of UFO challenge quilt

Make a walker bag

Finish making binding for Spider Web Quilt

Right eye gets a new lens on Thursday!  I probably won’t get any more sewing done until next week

Since I really didn't get anything done to share I've pulled out the pictures from the last quilt I finished in 2022.  I received a bunch of Roman Stripes blocks using Asian fabrics from Faithful Circle Quilters in our monthly lottery.  Thank goodness one member put the date on her block so I know it was the September, 2009 lottery block.  I had it on my APQ UFO Challenge list last year.  It came up in September.  I finished the top and finally quilted it the last week of 2022.

I had to make several additional blocks.  Sharon shared some of her Asian fabrics so I had a better variety. I used Saffron Blossom quilting design by Apricot Moon.  Recently I've been buying wide backs from Connecting Threads when they go on sale.  One of my favorites is Cobblestone. I used a soft lavender lavender Cobblestone for this quilt. And a darker Fossil Fern purple for the binding. (Talk about using older fabrics....)

And a closeup view of the front...

All my sewing needs to be done by Wednesday evening this week. On Thursday I'm going in for cataract surgery.  Everyone tells me I'll be very happy with my vision afterwards.  Two weeks later I'll have the other eye done.  My big worry is what the colors will look like in the quilts I've done since my eyes started going bad.  They may be a little wilder than I think they are!

Hopefully I'll be able to blog next Monday using one eye for reading. I'm getting a fancier lens that will give me good distance and mid range vision but not up close.  Right now I tend to take my glasses off for reading.  It will take a while to have to put glasses on for reading.  Have you had cataract surgery? How easy was it to adjust to the changes?

I'm linking up with my regular Linky parties. Take time to visit some of the blogs through these links.

  1. Sorry to hear that your quilting on the spider web is not to your liking, it's no fun to take out the long arm stitching. Hope you are able to diagnos and fix Ruthie, sometimes it can be a long process. Here's to healing fast with your cataract surgeries! The Asian quilt is very pretty!

  2. Honestly,I wish I’d waited longer to have cataract surgery. It went well and recovery did, too. I upgraded the lens to aid with my astigmatism, but I probably would have been happier with the regular lens.

  3. *Looking* forward to a good report from the surgery. I do like the setting for the string blocks!

  4. I had only one cataract surgery - I didn't need both eyes done at the same time period like most do as the cataract in one eye had grown very fast due to an eye surgery that I had done. I wanted to basically keep my vision the same - I have always been able to read and do close up work without glasses and that is how I kept it - I didn't want to have to wear reading glasses. So I still use glasses for everything but can still take them off for close up work when I want to. One day I will need to get the other cataract taken care of but not yet still doing fine.

  5. It's so frustrating to dislike something after finishing it. I hope it rips out easily. I like the Roman Strips Quilt. Where do you even get Asian fabrics? They are really pretty.

Good luck with your cataract surgery. I hope you come back with a glowing report as I have it coming up too.

  6. I had the surgeries a year ago (nearly to the day). It's nice to be able to see long distances without glasses (I've always been nearsighted). My biggest disappointment was in the new gla$$e$ I bought a month after the procedures. I opted for the lenses that turn dark in the sun, but unfortunately they never go entirely back to clear, keeping a yellow tint instead. That yellow is what went away with the cataracts, and now it's being artificially supplied again! Boo!!

  7. I did just have cataract surgery! Jan 23 for one eye and Feb 6 for the second eye. So far, so good! I got the single lens distance vision, and I am seeing things I haven't ever seen without glasses. For reading and sewing, right now I'm using readers, but planning to get prescription glasses again, because I don't care for the on-off with the readers. Colors are definitely brighter and whiter - you don't realize how yellowed things were looking. Everyone said to me, "You'll be so glad you did it!" about the surgery, and I am. Let me know if you want more details!

  9. Wishing you all the best with the upcoming surgery. I have not done that, but someday will need it as they are forming I am told.

  10. I am in LOVE with the Roman Stripes quilt, pattern and fabrics are wonderful.
Diann said it best - "Colors are definitely brighter and whiter". Although I do have a few days with some blurriness, I have been very happy with my surgeries and would do it again in a heartbeat. Good luck with yours!

  11. My husband had it in 2009, no difficulties in adjusting. Colors and sharpness were what impressed him. Would what you did on the Asian quilt work on the spider web? Good luck with surgery and with getting longarm to behave. I'm putting off dealing with mine until after a spring trip. I won't be doing anything for six weeks while I'm gone, so no hurry.

  12. All the best for the surgery, I doubt you'll be unhappy with all those colours in your quilts, sure to be just as you thought. Sorry about the quilting - not a good job pulling that out, no wonder its in time out.

  14. Hi Bonnie. That is so frustrating when your stitching doesn't work as well as we would like on our quilts. I've ripped a few back and started over myself so I can sympathise. I had cataract surgery on both eyes. The second was done the day before hospitals closed for the Covid shutdown. I was so happy it was done. I did find that colours are even more vibrant now, but the thing that surprised me most was white! I didn't realize that it looked a muddy yellow grey to me until I had one eye done and could compare the sights from eye to eye. I hope you have everything organized for your surgery date. You will be happy when they are both done. Then you can see what we see when we look at your lovely, colorful qults. Happy Valentines Day and thank you for linking with TO Do Tuesday.

  15. All the best with the surgery, hope it all goes well. I use 'computer glasses' only, no need for glasses while reading, sewing or long distance. Pretty quilt, love it!

  17. Definitely not bad progress last week. Sorry the quilting on the spider web quilt didn't work out. It can marinate a bit while you recover from eye surgery. Hope your recovery goes smoothly.
