Monday Meandering 3 - 1 - 2021

Are you ready for March?  To me, February seemed to drag by and yet it's the shortest month. Go figure! The week has been very productive for me though.  I read a couple of books and got just about all my goals ticked off the list.  It's taken me a couple of days to decide what I'm going to work on over this coming week. But I finally came up with a decent list.  Let's look at last week's goals list.

The only finish I am sharing today is the new yellow basket. (Yellow was the RSC color for February so I decided to use it for the basket since gobs of the yellow scraps were out anyway.)

Once I make the fabric I iron on some Pellon Flex Foam  2 sided fusible. The lining fabric is on the other side. I've got enough for about 2 more baskets but after that I might just get regular Flex Foam without the fusible.  It doesn't adhere too well.  I was augmenting it with a spray adhesive.  Then I quilt all the oversized pieces.  Yep, I'm using 1" painter's tape to get my lines.  I'm not looking for perfection here -- just getting the job done keeping all the pieces together. 

You can read about how I made the red basket here.  Originally I thought it was a mistake to sew the basket together with right sides facing.  The pattern called for sewing wrong sides together and then put a binding on the seams.  Not paying attention I sewed RST and wasn't too happy about it on the red one. But I could easily add a piece on the top instead of more binding.  When I made the yellow one I decided it made a lot of sense to do it that way -- it was much faster than fussing with all the binding!  The only thing I'm not thrilled with is the handle of the dark yellow plaid.  Oh well.  It's done and now in use! 

I've been surprised about how many yellow scraps I have.  I use yellow sometimes but I didn't think I used enough to have a whole basket  of it left! 

And, now it has joined the red and purple baskets on the shelf.  

I've enjoyed being able to grab a basket and do a quick search for scraps over the last few months.  I will be starting another soon -- I just don't know whether I'll go with the RSC color that is green or perhaps opt for blue which is overflowing the bag I have it in. I'm need to move a handful of books on the left of this shelf to be able to fit the next basket.  I have another shelf with some books on it that I hope to clear to get a total of 8 baskets of scraps. 

My goal list for this week is ready to see some action on it.

Make 3 or 4 more blocks for FCQ Equilters 

Pull out the Chunky Churn Dash blocks to see if I need more blocks & make some as needed

Both Pat and I have decided it makes sense to have a few more masks each.  I bought some "nose" bridges that allow you to shape the top of the mask to your nose. I used pipe cleaners in the original ones I made.  They have held up surprisingly well although we always take them out before the mask hits the washing machine.  I'm not thrilled with making new masks but it shouldn't take all that long once I get started. 

I thought I'd share a Chunky Churn Dash block that I made today. 

Altogether now "Awwww."  I have a multitude of scraps that have dogs on them. When I saw this guy I decided he had to be in a block.  The Chunky Churn Dash blocks are a UFO from several years ago.  I have something like 30 blocks hanging around.  Approximately half are cutesy like this new one and the other group is nice but not kid oriented.  I divided the blocks and put the "nice" ones away for another time but started making cute ones and now have 20 of them.  I'll be putting them on the design wall to see whether that's enough or whether I'll add more to them or a go with block.  These blocks were on a list of projects I wanted to pull out and finish. (Hum, does that mean I'll pull out the other group and make another quilt? Time will tell!) 

One last thing.  When I was checking my library for ebooks this past week I realized they listed pages of magazines as being "new."  I wasn't thrilled as I went through the pages as I thought maybe there were new books coming in that I might have wanted to reserve or put on my wish list.  Eventually several quilting magazines showed up.  I checked out a Quiltmaker, McCall's Quilting, and Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting. These were all current issues and they had issues going back to 2018 available too.  I can read it in my laptop's browser.  I haven't tried it on my iPad.  I haven't subscribed to a quilting magazine in years.  This will be a fun option when I feel like browsing a magazine. (But, do I really need new ideas? I saw one I liked when I was checking the names and how I could read it to report on it here.)

A Yellow Finish

Here we are almost at the end of February or "Yellow February" if you are playing along with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge for 2021.  I've stepped it up a bit and am also doing the Table Scrap Challenge using the RSC colors.  With no further to do, here's my yellow table runner. 

If you are looking for a name for the block I used, I can't tell you.  After I had all the pieces cut out and laid out, I randomly changed the directions on at least one four patch in each block.  So if you name it, it's probably only the name for one of the blocks.  Perhaps the name of this should be Wild Table Runner. 

Most of the pieces were cut with my AccuQuilt dies.  The blocks are 12" finished. The 4 patches start as 2.5" squares.  The half square triangles are made 2 at a time with 5" squares (sewn on lines a quarter inch away from the diagonal) trimmed to 4.5", and the centers are 4.5" using the Go Round Flower Die.  I used a shiny embroidery thread in yellow for the quilting.  Unlike last month's table runner, I was ready to get this one done -- so I used a minimal amount of quilting.  You can see the square around the four patches.  I also stitched in the ditch by the yellow part of the triangles. (I stitched in the batting to move from triangle to triangle.)  And I called it done.  Not a very time consuming table runner. And it looks bright and sunny on our table. 

Do you see the mug at the far end?  I got that from my grandparent's house.  It is a Royal Dalton Toby mug.  It had some yellow flowers and and overall springy look to me so it became part of the picture. 
 

Thanks go to Nann at With Strings Attached for the backing fabric. A while ago I got a surprise box in the mail filled with fabric. I know I used several pieces when I was making masks. But I hadn't looked through it recently so I decided to see if there was any yellow fabric in there that would work for the back. Yes, there was a nice piece that works well. 

It makes a nice little roll with the backing being shown.  

Here you can see the binding, a bit of the front and the backing.  I used a bunch of different yellows from my yellow scrap bag which you can see a bit here. 

I've finished my yellow friendship stars and have added them to the pink stars on the design wall. 

I'm closing in on the yellow scrap basket I've been making for a while.  I haven't decided if I will continue to make a basket in the RSC color every month.   I think it will depend on whether I have lots of scraps in a particular color.  

And, what happens to your yardage collection when you are trying to find binding for a table runner and lining for a basket?  It's thrown around quite a bit.  So, before the end of the month I will straighten my yellow yardage.  

I've been working on straightening my piles of yardage by picking a new color every few weeks. (Heaven forbid I do it all at one time.)  A couple of weeks ago it was pink.  Now I need to do the yellows. My shelves hold fabric that is supposedly at least 1/2 yard and more.  I say supposedly because sometimes I leave smaller pieces there and sometimes I cut hunks off but leave the rest. For the longest time I bought mostly half yard pieces. In the last few years I've been trying to buy 1 yard or larger pieces so I can more easily pull fabric for a lap quilt from stash.  Sometimes that works, and sometimes not. It won't take more than 10 or 15 minutes to have those yellows looking good again. (Ugh, both the greens and browns look pawed through too...)

Monday Meanderings 2 - 23 - 2021

Much was done this week but most of it will be revealed fully later.  So, going straight to my goals for last week will show I was working really hard most of the week.  (In between reading weather reports and watching sleet and snowfall)

I also made several different blocks for various reasons. So a lot of personal sewing was done after I finished binding the t shirt quilt.

Next up are my goals for this week.  With so many things being close to completion or actually finished I had to figure out what UFO or new project to start.  I picked one of each.  Here's what's happening this coming week.

Do you spend time reading blogs from the various blog parties?  I enjoy seeing and hearing what folks are working on.  I read quite a few blogs last week and had to share a new quilter's term one blogger coined.  I loved it. QSD.  You don't know what it is?  Well, go look at Beauty's Creation. Didn't find it?  It stands for Quilter's Squirrel Disorder.  I think that is one of the cutest acronym yet.  And, oh how I empathize with it.  Hum, I wonder if the strippy baby quilt listed above might be considered part of the Squirrel Disorder?

Monday Meanderings 2 - 15 - 2021

Winter has really arrived in the Mid-Atlantic states.  Last Monday my iPhone showed this for our weather. Supposedly 7 snowy days out of 9 days.  Luckily we didn't have that much snow.  We had snow on Thursday.  Not too bad.  Then a bit of rain on Friday with more snow overnight. And Saturday it was mostly sleet with snow during the day.  Nothing is really melting yet.  But it will be as there is only one day this week showing snow/rain.  I guess it will depend on when it starts raining if it becomes snow.  

I spent most of the weekend stitching.  But I did snap this quick photo out of my french doors in my basement studio.  We haven't seen this much ice and snow for years.

No pictures yet of the T shirt quilt but the quilting was done by noon on Saturday.  One day this past week I pulled out the bits  of yellow and white units.  I laid out what I had and came up with an idea for a 3 block table runner.  (Yes, I like smaller runners as we keep our table small unless we have a crowd.)  I did get a few other blocks made too.  So, overall, I was really happy with what I finished this past week.  I've got several more blocks cut out ready to be sewn too. That left me more than enough time to really clean up my cutting table on Sunday. 

This is how it looked Sunday around 3:00 pm.  Truth be told I started working on my table runner again and I left all sorts of yellow and white fabrics on the purple cutting mat and something on the grey one too.  The AccuQuilt cutter was opened again and used. I've promised myself that I would clean it all up again when I finish the runner.  Time will tell!

NEWS FLASH:  I forgot an entire quilt when I reported my January stashbusting statistics.  It was my Wild Snowball quilt that I posted on February 1. (You can also see what my cutting table looked like before the big clean up in the same post.) It added another 4.25 yards.  Here are the new statistics. It made the month look even better than it was!  I'm hoping I don't succumb to buying any fabric this month.  I've succeeded for half a month.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day --- on Sunday.  Today I thought I would share my Valentine's Day quilts. Valentine's Day is well represented in my quilt collection.  So here are the ones I found to hang or put out this year.  I think I have one more but it's not out. 

In the early 90's I was on Prodigy one of the first Internet providers for consumers. There was a very active quilting group on it.  We had a lot of block swaps.  These are one set, 4" blocks with quarter square triangles set between.  I like how the quarter square triangles set off each heart block.  Some of the blocks were signed and I've actually found some of the gals on the Internet in the last few years.  Someday I'll probably see if I can find any of the others.  

At one time almost every quilt I made was a Mystery Quilt.  Marge at Delaware Quilts offered mystery quilts to folks who made donations to the American Cancer Society.  I subscribed on a regular basis and often made her quilts.  Some of her mystery quilts are available to purchase on her web site. This one was called Folk Art Hearts.  Also check out her block instructions collection. 

A little table runner.  I love the various fabrics in this one.  I used a heart design from the long arm to quilt each heart. 

My last Valentine quilt was made from blocks I won.  The Maryland guild has a monthly block opportunity.  I used to send a block when I moved away. I was happy to win these heart blocks.  I used the book Circle of Nines for the design. (It is no longer in print but I did find one by Googling the title.) I've been looking at my book recently and I can't figure out which design this is.  Most of the quilts are square.  Maybe I made it rectangular but I can't remember! 

I may have one more quilt but I've run out of places to hang them in the house.  There are several holidays that I need to make quilts for  -- maybe this year... or maybe not.

Monday Meandering 2 - 8 -2021

Another snowstorm!  We had a few inches last Sunday.  We had some more inches this Sunday.  Neither one required much work to clear but they were both fun to watch.  The grands all enjoyed some serious sledding.  I spent time in the studio during the weather events.

Here's my purple basket. I decided a while ago to make cloth baskets to hold my colored scraps.  This is a different pattern but it looks like it will work just fine.  

Here are the two finished ones on the shelf.  (Hum, I need to move the books as I make more of these baskets.)  I wonder what color I should do next?

It took a bit to figure out what I need to do this coming week.  The biggest news is the t shirt quilt is now a top.  I forgot to put it on the list last week but  the quilting definitely will be on this week.  I've got a couple more quilts coming in for customers soon.  It's nice to do quilts for others but I also like my sewing time for me. Here's what I'm planning to work on this week.

What did look great this past month is my fabric usage.  I used more than I brought in! Whoopee!  I'm curious how you account for wide backs since I bought 4 yards this month?  Last year I decided I would add just one yard in but only count one yard used even if I got 2 smaller quilts on the width.  This year I'm trying something different.  I'm going to count each wide back yard as 2 yards.  It seems more realistic to me.  I'll see how I like it (and whether it's difficult to figure it out) this year and maybe adjust it next year.

A Finish -- A Long Time Coming

 First the personal good news! 

Wow!  Mary Washington Hospital Center was so very well organized!  I was really early for my appointment because I thought it was an hour earlier than it was.  No problem. They moved me in from car check in to being texted to come on in.  Yes there was a small line but it moved so quickly.  Next thing I know I was chatting pleasantly with the gal getting ready to give me the shot.  No, she didn't know how many shots she had given but I sensed it was a whole bunch. What? You're done already?  I don't think I even felt it go in -- amazing.  Then on to set my follow up appointment which is 4 weeks away.  I was done before my actual appointment time.  

Backing up a bit  -- it started with the Rappahannock Area Health District being on top of their game.  I filled out an on line survey saying I wanted to get a vaccine several weeks ago. On 1/22 I received an acknowledgement and was told to expect a text when I could sign up for an appointment.  The email to sign up came in Wednesday morning. It probably sat in my in box for 15 minutes but once I saw it I immediately scheduled my appointment -- for the very next day!  Pat got his announcement within the hour but I had left for a hair cut so he didn't know exactly when my appt was so  he goes first thing tomorrow morning.  We were euphoric!  Kudos to the state of Virginia and RAHD for keeping us well informed and Mary Washington Hospital for being so organized.  

So on to my quilty news.  Today I share a great quilt.  I really love it but man, it has been very problematic.  First off an overall picture of the quilt.  I started this sometime in the late 1990s or possibly early 2002 or so.  I went to a mystery retreat in Lancaster, PA with several gals from my quilt guild.  We had a great time. I didn't get the quilt finished there so it got shunted aside.  Every once and a while it would come out and I'd get some of it done.  I can't say when I got the top completely together.  I decided to hand quilt it as it was before I had my long arm.  I batted it up and basted it and added some pin basting too.  I drug this thing around for YEARS! I'd mark a bit and hoop it up and stitch until my fingers were sore and I was bored.  

Sometime in 2019 I finished the inside of the quilt and started in on the borders.  I don't know why I chose a braid that had 8 rows in it. (Yes, equivalent to going around the border 8 times.)  Near the end of last year I decided to get serious and get this thing done!  So mid January all the quilting was done.  It was time to bind it.  In my infinite wisdom I did put some of the backing fabric in the bag I toted around for years.  It had a note that said 6/2004.  I suspect that was when I started the hand quilting. I stitched the first side of the binding by machine and finished with hand stitching.  DONE!  Since I had been dragging it around so long I knew it had to be washed.  I think I've already mentioned that the backing fabric bled when some water for my iron splashed on it.  But, let's move to a picture or two before I finish this tale.

And, so it's time to continue my tale. Since I knew it was going to bleed I loaded the quilt in the washer with bunches of Color Catchers.  I mean A LOT.  Most were new, a few were slightly used and were very pale blue.  Shock number #1. 

YIKES! Every single one came out a very deep red. Well, except that one with the fold marks.  Some how it had gotten folded and the color didn't penetrate the entire color catcher. (What does it say about my darn washer that it didn't agitate enough to open the darn catcher? Yes, it's a blasted front loader.) 

Here's what the pathetic quilt looked like when I took it out of the washer the first time. 

So, this is may be after the 2nd wash.  I wasn't thinking particularly well the day I washed this as I didn't put a towel or something else in to balance it in the washer.  It was dripping wet when done. I had to wring the thing out to get it so it wasn't dripping all over the place before it went in the dryer. Sigh.

And, Color Catchers #2.  Seven new ones. So why the one in the middle didn't turn pink is a mystery. 

It dried fine but it no longer looks the same. 

So, it isn't horrible but it definitely turned some parts of the quilt pink.The green isn't as vibrant either.  The squares of now pink, were a light cream with little gold specks in them.  I loved it.  But, I still like this.  It just isn't what it was.  Should I have washed the backing fabric before I used it? You bet!  I have been washing every piece of fabric (except precuts) for years.  Truth be told I don't know when I became so fanatical about pre washing everything. Probably when another red fabric bled like crazy.  Maybe that happened after I had already started quilting this one.  It will still look beautiful during Christmas and will evoke memories of the fun my friends and I had at the mystery retreat. But, boo for the bleeding red! Let this be a lesson to everyone who loves to use a strong red!  On the other hand, I'm so glad I dropped water on it and learned it was going to bleed.  I might have put a lot less Color Catchers in and had an even pinker quilt. And, no I don't blame the Color Catchers.  They did the best job they could have -- I should have put the whole box in!

Monday Meanderings 2 - 1 - 2021

 Hello February -- Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow tomorrow, 2/2?  You can read more about him and his prognostic endeavors on Wikipedia.  The weather forecast in my area doesn't support an early spring at all.  Starting next weekend our temperatures will be in the teens overnight and low 30s to 20s during the day.  Brr.  On the other hand that's a long time from now weather-wise so it may change a lot. 

How did you do on your goals this past week?  I was really successful.  (Note: that doesn't mean I did all of them; just that the ones I really wanted to get done, got done!)

I'm happy to say I only have to sew the top and bottom borders together and then add them to the t shirt quilt.  I am really looking forward to finishing this quilt.  I enjoy working on my own projects but every once in a while I take on a big project for a customer.  It's time to get this quilt done.

Just so you know I really do need to straighten my cutting space and put fabric away. 

Here's the worse area. 

Yea, I'm not the neatest quilter.  I am lucky to have a very big cutting area.  It's divided into 3 sections.  This front section I "can" cut on but more often I use it to stage my projects: pulled fabric, fabric that needs to stay out until the project is done, things like that. I am notorious for piling up fabric that I've used and then letting it just pile up deeper.  Think archeological dig.   Below, you can see the purple mat that is usually pretty cleaned off and is my main cutting mat. 

I've been stashing cut off fabric at the top of the cutting area.  It's now overwhelming the space and I have less and less space to cut on.  Not a good thing. The space beyond the rulers has my Accuquilt Go Cutter.  It's open and ready to use. If you look back to the first picture above ... the fabric at the bottom right is basically leftovers from the Go cutting.  I tend to toss the little bits, but every once in awhile there are usable pieces left that get piled up there.  ARGH.  It's now driving me crazy.  Therefore it is now time to put this stuff away. (Or throwaway maybe.) 

Since yellow is the RSC color for February I decided to check out my collection of odd blocks and block parts.  I knew I had some yellow bits and pieces.  I'll be figuring out how to incorporate these in whatever project I make. 

Finally, here is the finished top that I quilted and bound last week.  For those of you who read about the Pink Table Scraps runner, I used the same navy blue binding from Kona. 

I've decided to name it Wild Snowballs.  You might remember that my swap group (FCQ Equilters) was making snowball blocks last fall.  I have the 6" snowball die from Accuquilt so I went to town making them.  Often I made two of the fabric so I had a nice collection of blocks for myself. They make a wonderful leader ender block.  So I just kept making them.  And, finally, a quilt!  I used some Kona white (or Snow or one of their whites) for the sashing.  The corner stones was a grey grid that I got in a kit I didn't want to make but loved the fabrics.  

When I went to quilt it I realized that It needed to be finished some how.  The botton row had sashing, but the top and two sides did not.  No problem I thought I'd cut some more sashing and corner stones and be done with it.  Except... I didn't have enough of the grey corner stone fabric.  My solution was to sash the top and then use the white only on the side borders with 4 more corner stones. It worked really well.  You can see pictures of this project here and here.  Here's a couple of close ups.  Left, while quilting; right after quilting.

I haven't any plans for this quilt yet.  I'll probably hold on to it until Hands 2 Help 2021 that Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict does every spring.  It's great having a head start on it.
