Are you looking for a special America 250 quilt? Take a look at the free quilt along, “Semiquincentennial” in honor of America’s birthday.  https://bomquilts.com/2026-semiquincentennial-bom/#google_vignette  The patterns are issued monthly beginning March 20. TK Harrison, who designed the quilt, also has a page with tutorials to make different units in the quilt.  Blocks are 15” finished.

Congratulations! You've been appointed  ambassador to Polychromia! And you’ll be having some fun experiences working with color. You can make either a wall quilt 49 x 49" or 98 x 98". Take a look at the explanation of the experience. It sounds like a lot of fun. https://www.modernquiltstudio.com/product/ambassador/  $

Sewcialites 3 began on February 20th. Every Friday until August 21 a new block will be released. (Except the Fourth of July weekend you get a break!) https://blog.fatquartershop.com/join-us-for-the-free-sewcialites-3-quilt-along/. February 2026 Mysteries and Sew Alongs

Check out https://quiltingwithtamara.com/blog/2026_block-of-the-month/ for a creative block of the month called Block of the Month with a Twist.  If you scroll to the bottom of Tamara’s info page there are links to her Free Quilt Block Library which features 12” blocks and her Scrappy Quilt Patterns. The Scrapy Quilt Patterns piqued my interest.

Jessica Dayon is sharing The 2026 Scrappy Sampler Block of the Week with two blocks released each week. The first 8 blocks have already been shared but are available. Or you can just save them and make them later.  The blocks will be available through the whole event which lasts until March 26th. Get more information https://jessicadayon.blogspot.com/2025/12/announcing-2026-scrappy-sampler-block.html . One issue with this quilt along is  you must go to the You Tube video each week and check the written description for the link to written directions. This takes you to Google Docs where you can save the document. Mine saved to my download file.  A little more time but so far I’ve been impressed with the blocks.

I Still Play With Blocks started 2/1. For more info and to join go to https://cottonandjoy.com/pages/block-of-the-month-2026?utm_campaign=2026-013DayBlitz&utm_content=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=flodesk

This is not a free event. $$

Here’s a different take on a quilt along. Check out Gnome Angel’s Bookish Quilt Club.  You’re going to be prompted to choose a book, a fabric, and a technique based on the monthly prompt.  It sounds like a fun way to get some reading in and try or use new techniques.  Check the information page: https://www.gnomeangel.com/gnomeangels-bookish-quilt-club-2026/

Snuggles Quilts is offering a wool block of the month starting with the February block available on January15th and every 15th day of the month for the year. This year is Sheep Year. Sign up for Deanne’s newsletter and get more info: https://snugglesquilts.com/block-of-the-month/ . If you are interested in doing  wool applique this might be for you. There appears to be a lot of information on how to do wool applique at this site.

Material Girlfriends is offering a 6 month block of the month called Bona Fide. Basic info is available now with directions starting February 15. https://materialgirlfriends.com/2026-sew-along-bona-fide/.  Check out their free Interwoven Hearts pattern — it’s a quick 30” sq Valentine’s Day table topper.  (Hint — Scroll through the rest of the free patterns.  There might be one that talks to you! )

If you notice an upcoming mystery or sew along feel free to send me the link.

September Mysteries and Quilt Alongs September 2025

Sorry I am so late getting this posted.  I just forgot about it and kept postponing.  Maybe one of these events will interest you. I'll have October's out around Oct. 2nd.

Let’s start with Autumn Nights presented by the Fat Quarter Shop. It’s a small mystery quilt that is 31” by 32”.  Get all the details here: https://www.fatquartershop.com/sew-alongs/autumn-nights-mystery-quilt-and-stitch-along?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=sqal-autumn-nights-2025  All the clues/patterns are now available.  Check for videos for each clue on Fat Quarter Shop's You Tube Channel. There is a counted cross stitch version also available.

I’m always amazed that new web sites with mysteries or sew alongs pop up when I do a search. The web site is called Mystery Quilts Anonymous. The current mystery is called Bear Hugs — the link takes you to info on quite a few mysteries. https://mysteryquiltsanonymous.com/current-mysteries/ .   I haven’t found specifics in terms of number of clues, start or finish dates. And, I realize that there are several other mysteries available if you are interested. I clicked on one of the Bear Hug clues and found a list of tags. From there I clicked on mysteries. That open a series of pages showing quite a few other pages of mysteries.  (If you get to the home page instead of the mysteries page look across the top and click on Free Mysteries.) Surprise -- There is a new mystery called Focal Point. Click on the title of the mystery you want to see. Once on the new page you have to scroll through all the info in the small box. Just click "Download" to transfer the page to your computer.

Here’s another smaller mystery quilt.  Love Sew is presenting this 24.5” x 24.5” top.  Here’s the link to the clues.  https://love-sew.com/pages/mystery-sew-along-week-3? No idea how many clues will be coming out. I bet most of us have enough fabric stash to make this one without buying anything new!

August Mysteries and Quilt Alongs August 2025

August 2025 Mysteries and Sew Alongs

Here’s a new one to me. It’s called Aloha 5-0.  You need to sign up for it through any of the quilt stores who are offering it.  To sign up you need to purchase a $50 gift card from a participating quilt store. (Yep, you basically commit to buying $50 worth of fabric, patterns notions etc.) There is a private Facebook group for this mystery.  Do a Google search on Aloha 5-0 quilt to find stores that are participating.  It starts August 6, 2025 with emailed directions sent every week in August with the finishing instructions sent in September. Here’s the web address of one of the stores participating in Aloha 5-0. https://www.quilt-lady.com/mystery-five-0.htm  $$ (but you get it back when you buy from the store.)

Hello Fall is a Mystery Sew Along that will featuring a pieced design enhanced with wool appliqué and embroidery.  The designs will be available free for one week until the next block is released. It starts August 8. Here's a link to one of the stores that is participating. https://reetsragstostitches.com/blogs/news/hello-fall-new-farmhouse-friends-sew-along You can join their Farm House Friends Facebook group to find others who are participating.

The Fat Quarter Shop is having a sew along featuring The Jolly Bar Book Vo. 5.  You must buy the book. It starts August 13th and runs until December.  The schedule and fabric requirements are a free download. https://www.fatquartershop.com/the-jolly-bar-book-vol-5-sampler-quilt-along-fabric-requirements-free-pdf-pattern?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=jolly-bar-5-qal-announcement $

July 2025 Mysteries and Sew Alongs

Here's what I found for July.  There are probably a lot more out there that I don't know about. Please send me an email and I'll add it to my list.  I try to post about one the month before it starts.  Sometimes I don't find the info in time so I post it later.  Hope you find one you want to participate in.

Mystery Quilts for Military group is having a sew along this summer to make a patriotic quilt appropriate for Quilts of Valor or other presentations to veterans. To access the clues you must join the group at this link.

Mysteryquilts4Military.groups.io|home    Go to the bottom of the page to subscribe. You will start receiving the emails announcing the Sew Along and member comments. You should be able to access previous Mysteries in the files if you are looking for some more quilt ideas. Generally this is a quiet group except when there is a mystery or sew along.

Not much info available but check out this web page to join the Front Porch Quilt Along this summer

Up on The Rooftop Mystery Quilt and Cross Stitch Along will start at the Fat Quarter Shop on Tuesday, July 12 .  This is a slightly later due to delays in receiving the fabric you can buy to make the project. Every week patterns (quilting and cross stitch) and a video will be released. You can purchase fabric packs or floss for it.  Check out here for the basics.  Check here for the starting info.

Free Sew along “Bloomers” by Quiltery started 6/30 and runs until 12/1, a  new block will be released every 2 weeks. Plan to get the patterns before the next one is released or there will be a charge for the old one.  Check it out.

The Magnificent Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along offered by Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Design.  This is Cheryl’s 11th mystery offering.  On July 3rd she’ll release hints and the fabric requirements. Then the first Thursday of every month until April 2026 another clue will be released.  Read more about it at Cheryl's blog

ScrapDash has a free sew along called Bean There that started in May. OOPS! Check out the info here. She has links to the hints for all of the units in the block.  Although it is almost over if the quilt is of interest you can use her schedule to create personal dates.  (This link was not working when I uploaded this post. I will keep trying to get it to work so please check on it again in a few days.)

June 2025 Mysteries and Sew Alongs

June 2025 Mysteries and Sew Alongs

Wonderfil started a quilt along in April called Coffee Break. You’ll have access to all blocks that have already been shared once you sign up. There will be 9 blocks. This is foundation paper piecing and wool hand embroidery. Kits may be available still. Go take a look and sign up here: https://shopwonderfil.com/bom-2025/ .

Blockhead 6 is starting on May 28th.  Join in the fun as a new block is released each week. Read more about it here: https://modafabrics.com/inspiration-resources/blockheads-6-kick-off

The Fat Quarter Shop has started their newest sew along called Stardust Charity.  It offers a quilt version and a counted cross stitch version. The Fat Quarter Shop uses this event as a fund raiser for their local Make-a-Wish foundation. Check out the pre-start info post: https://blog.fatquartershop.com/lets-get-ready-for-stardust. And also Release 1 post.

Here’s a heads up for several mystery quilt alongs that the Fat Quarter Shop will be sponsoring.  This link takes you to information about several upcoming mysteries.  https://blog.fatquartershop.com/mystery-quilt-alongs-in-2025/. I’ll post about each before they begin.

Just some reminders for those who are fans of 3 yard quilts. Fabric Cafe posts one of their patterns free every few months or so. Currently there are 3 of their 3 Yard Quilt patterns and 2 additional patterns. They add a new one every few months. https://www.fabriccafe.com/Free-Patterns-s/2014.htm. You can also go to their home page and click on Free Goodies.

Material Girlfriends continues their year long event posting a new free pattern. May’s offering is 3Yd Papa.  You can find it here: https://materialgirlfriends.com/2025-sew-along/ . I’m thinking of finding some 1.25 yard fabric and use my die cutter for this one.

September Mysteries and Quilt Alongs

I'm early this month.  Which is a good thing as some of these quilt alongs have already started. Here's what I've found this month

Pat Sloan started Chicken Salad Quilt Along on Aug. 24th. It will run until Nov. 17.  She will announce one block a week from Lori Holt’s Farm Girl Vintage and Farm Girl Vintage 2.  Sign up with Pat to get notices of her go-along videos. $$ for books. https://www.ilovetomakequilts.com/chicken-salad-qal.html

Jaqueline Steves will be starting a new snowman mystery on Sept. 25. There is a free option and a paid option https://jacquelynnesteves.com/snowmen-from-heaven-sew-along/  $ if chosen.

Mystery Quilts 4 Military has started a new quilt. The Four Corners Mystery started Aug 2 with new clues released every other week.  You must join the group, MysteryQuilts4Military, at https://groups.io/g/MysteryQuilts4Military. The fabric and cutting info along with the first two clues are in the Files section.

Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gathering has two quilt alongs just starting. First is Joyful Quilt Along started Tuesday August 27. Blocks will be posted every Tuesday. If you miss a block you can buy it for  $3.00.https://lisabongean.com/39539-2/ first clue is already up so check as soon as you get the newsletter to see if it is still available free.

Lisa’s second event is a block of the month entitled Black Star Flower Farm.  This is offered for wool or for cotton.  The first monthly block was posted in August. Here’s the home page for all the info. The patterns are free in the month they are posted and $8.00 a pattern after that. The patterns are posted on the 10th of each month for 13 months.  Hopefully you still have a  bit of time to collect the first block without paying. https://lisabongean.com/39075-2/

Here’s something a little different and older: Riley Blake Designs was featuring some designs for its new low volume designer collection in October of 2021.  Follow the Blue Bird to get a choice of bird designs: appliqué, paper pieced, or pieced at https://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/follow-the-blue-bird. Sandy Gervais shared a pattern for a 26” square mat called Fall Ya All. https://piecesfrommyheart-sgervais.blogspot.com/2021/10/follow-blue-bird.html A perfect small project to welcome fall.

The guild that I write this column for, Faithful Circle Quilters, is having a show in early May of 2024. We will be having a $20 and Under Table of small items. I've been scouring the Internet for free patterns for small items that might work for this. Here's a couple of ideas I've found.

Directions to make a needle minder. https://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2023/07/needle-minder-tutorial.html?m=1

Directions for several different bookmarks. https://www.heatherhandmade.com/sew-easy-bookmarks-free-pattern/

Directions for a Triangle Pencil Pouch. https://sew4home.com/scrapbusters-triangle-pencil-and-more-pouch-1/

Directions for a Charm Square Fabric Tray.  https://aspoonfulofsugardesigns.com/charm-square-fabric-tray/

Hopefully these are live links and will take you right to the correct listing.  If they don't please highlight the address, copy, and paste to get to the site.

Hope you have fun looking and making some of these quilts and little gifts. (Maybe a gift for you!)

Many thanks to Vicki, who blogs at Vicki's Crafts and Quilting, for catching the incorrect link for Black Star Flower Farm. I'm saving the designs from that one. I may never use them but I really like how they look.

August Mysteries and Sew Alongs

Here's what I found this month.

Mystery Quilt 4 Military is starting a new quilt soon. You must join the Groups.Io group to participate.  Here’s the link: MysteryQuilts4Military+subscribe@groups.io. The fabric requirements and cutting directions for this mystery was shared on Aug. 2.  Clue 1 starts August 16, and continues weekly until the last clue on 9/20/2023. It is a great way to make a patriotic quilt for QOV or other organizations supporting our veterans.

Piecing the Past is offering a free block a week program called Grandma’s Scrap Basket beginning August 7.  Here’s more info and the link to sign up to receive the weekly email with the pattern. https://www.piecingthepastquilts.com/grandmas-scrap-basket-signup

Here’s something a little different — an embroidery stitch along. ’Tis the Season Stitchalong will make a small wall hanging.  Check it out at Days Full of Joy. Here’s the link to the first week. https://www.daysfilledwithjoy.com/2023/07/08/tis-the-season-stitchalong-week-1/  This ended on Friday, 8/4/23.  But Joy generally leaves the directions up. Here's a peak at Week 2.

Flash Fiction Mystery Quilt offers a quilt to make, a book to read, and puzzles to help solve the mystery and prizes. https://www.flashfictionmysteryquilt.com/  Registration is going on now with a start date of Aug. 31 and goes for 12 months.  $$

Happy Quilting All! Bonnie

Mysteries and Quilt Alongs April

Yea! I've finally gotten the Mysteries and Quilt Along header corrected.  You can click on the header and see all the M & QAL posts  I've written. (Yes, I never did one for March.) I hope I'll get one written early each month.

Here's what's new in April:

The first three quilt alongs are sponsored by the Fat Quarter Shop.

Home Again Quilt Along is beginning April 4, running until May 2.  You will need to purchase the pattern (available as a PDF download.) Check out the pattern and info here: https://blog.fatquartershop.com/announcing-the-home-again-quilt-along/

Triangles on a Roll Quilt Along by the Fat Quarter Shop.  This quilt along features 2”, 3”, and 4” finished half square triangles which can be made using Triangles on a Roll. (Anybody else have lots of these rolls hanging around in their stash?)  The quilt will finish at 74.5” square.  This is a fat quarter friendly quilt. The pattern will release on March 30 and the QAL will run for seven weeks. $ if you need to buy Triangles on a Roll although you can choose a different method to making the triangles. https://blog.fatquartershop.com/triangles-on-a-roll-quilt-along-for-worldwide-quilting-day/

Vintage Kite quilt along will have a kick off event and and full pattern release starting 4/11. The quilt along will start 4/12. Read more about it https://blog.fatquartershop.com/join-us-for-the-vintage-kite-quilt-along/. $ if you buy the foundation  papers.

Jacqueline Steves new BOM called Sew Happy. https://jacquelynnesteves.com/sew-happy-free-block-of-the-month/ Will run from May to September with patterns being emailed on the 2nd Monday of the month.

Did you know the National Quilt Museum has artists in their collection develop  a block of the month? Neither did I. See and download  Round 4 blocks here: https://quiltmuseum.org/blockofthemonth/. If you continue down the page other rounds are still available.  You can also join their Facebook group. I’ll add Round 5 info for the May newsletter.

Bomquilts.com released info about a free block of the month in February. Currently there are links to an introduction, tutorial, and fabric requirements. It appears block instructions begin April 20 and continues through December 20. Log Cabin Love.

If you are sponsoring a Mystery Quilt or Quilt Along please feel free to send me the information.  I'll add it the month before it begins.  If you know of new listings that are starting soon -- let me know so I can include it here.

I've been toying with the idea of doing the Triangles on a Roll sew along that is sponsored by the Fat Quarter Shop.  I have two of the three sizes needed and I'd really like to use some of them up.  For the sizes I don't have I'm sure I can figure out a different way to make them.

What event strikes your fancy?

Happy Quilting All! Bonnie

Mysteries and Quilt Alongs (Repeat of Jan. 3, 2023)

I have been trying to get a listing of Mystery and Quilt Along posts in the Heading Mysteries and Quilt Alongs below my header. I believe I set it up wrong the first time I did it and I couldn't figure out what went wrong. So I've removed it from Jan. 3 and reposted it today, Mar 30.  I doubt anyone will be starting any of these but I thought I would see if I could fix this listing.

For over a year I've been searching out sew alongs and mysteries to share in my guild's newsletter.  I can't attend too many meetings of Faithful Circle Quilters in Columbia, Maryland. Gathering info on Sew Alongs and Mysteries is one thing I can do for the guild. It dawned on me recently that I could also share the information with my readers.  So at the beginning of each month I will  post (um, try to post) a listing of sew alongs and mysteries.  I will add a tab at the top so you can easily access the posts. Please feel free to share any info you have on mystery quilts and sew alongs that are coming up.  Here's what I found for January, 2023.

Riley Blake Designs is offering a block challenge again this year.  It will run from January 3 to May 23 with new blocks coming out every Tuesday except the last Tuesday of the month.  Find out more about it. https://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/2023-rbd-block-challenge

Do you want an easy sew along? Look at the Nine Patch Sampler. You will get an email with block instructions every week for 9 weeks. The quilt along begins Jan 2.  https://www.epidastudio.com/nine-patch-sampler-quilt/.

Sherri McConnell is offering a block of the month again in 2023. Find all the details here: https://www.aquiltinglife.com/a-quilting-life-mystery-block-of-the-month-2023/ Sherri offers directions for 6" and 12" blocks.

Pat Sloan is offering Sweet Childhood Memories Block a Week.  It starts Jan 4 and runs until May 10th.  Patterns are released each Wednesday.  You can download the supply list now. https://www.ilovetomakequilts.com/sweet-childhood-memories.html

Which Way to Witchville is a Block of the Month for a Facebook group called Cackling Stitches.  The BOM starts January 1 and runs until September 30. You start with a center of your choice and add borders based on what is called for each round. You can read all about it here. https://quiltinggail.com/2022/12/30/announcing-sahrr-2023/

I've added a dollar sign ($) in front of any that require a purchase.  Often there is a pattern or book that must be purchased.  Generally the cost is reasonable.  Sometimes a donation is requested for a worthy cause.

As I said above please feel free to send me info about upcoming sew alongs.  I'll be happy to add to the next month's post. (Although, I will retain the right to not include an event at my discretion.)

If the links are not active you can always copy and paste them into your browser.

I am happy to "enable" everyone with these opportunities.

Happy Quilting! Bonnie
