Airplanes and More

I failed to take a picture of my airplane quilt.  Rats! On Saturday it went to St. Francis NICU to be used as needed.  Here's a picture of one block and the quilting.
I used Dave's Airplane edge to edge.  It you look at the nose of the yellow plane you'll see the tail of the quilted plane. It's a rounded looking plane. The wing goes to the left and down from the engine. See the hook to the left of the yellow plane's tail?  That's the other wing which also makes the cockpit.  Very stylized but I liked it on the quilt.  I used Superior's Omni thread in silver.  I don't remember which batting I used but I know it was a leftover piece.

So the last pictures of our DC trip are from the Air and Space Museum. (Yesterday's pictures were from the National Museum of American History.)

Dadaaaadumm... yes, it is the Enterprise from Star Trek.  Recently we've found a station that runs Star Trek episodes every evening.  We've gotten hooked.  (And  we really don't watch much television.)  Looking back at the program it is amazing how simple and pretty crazy the sets, costumes and lands were.  But I'm enjoying them way too much.

I have no idea why this balloon was displayed.  I just thought it was interesting.  This is the last of my DC trip photos.  I didn't even get a photo of lunch with our son. He works up the street from the Mall so we try to go when he is free for lunch.  We met at the National  Museum of the American Indian. The lunch was great but like all museum food it was expensive.  I'm sure we'll plan another trip to DC in the fall.  Even though we went in late May there were tons of tour buses of teens and lots of families.  Maybe the fall will be less crowded.

A Trip to DC

A month or two ago we went up to Washington on the VRE.  (We are senior citizens and it was half price for us!)  Here are a few random pictures I took during the trip.

The Travelers

This could be inspiration for an upcoming quilt! This is part of the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Did you ever think that outdoor sculptures were cleaned?  We were in the Sculpture Garden before the museums opened.  I couldn't resist taking this picture as a group of ladies scrubbed away.  Yep, this intricate statue was getting a good cleaning!

There was a display on the Mall showing the issues with plastics in our oceans.  Here's an eye-popping statistic regarding the amount of plastic.  This sign was attached to a cargo container.  Eek!

(Rats, even playing with the brightness in my photo program doesn't help.) Read below to find out about this old Singer that made buttonholes! You might be able to see the buttonhole shape under the needle if you click on the picture to enlarge it.

What?  Looser clothes helped the commercial dressmaking business?

That's all I've got on the DC trip at this point.  I've got a few more pictures I'll be sharing over the next week or so.

Nation's Triathlon

No, don't panic, I did NOT run a triathlon. But some one close to me did so we all trooped down to the Potomac River to cheer Kevin on.

We hiked by the Lincoln Memorial.... it's been years (decades?) since I've been on foot near any of the memorials in Washington.

Here's a peak of the Lincoln statue inside the memorial.

Before too long we were in the midst of the race. There were over 5000 participants this year -- nearly double from last year. Kevin was already done with his swim and almost finished with his ride when we got there. But we were lucky to see him ride in for the transition from bike to run. A big cheer went up from us. (he said he heard us . . . but maybe it was our general noise.)

I got a real kick out this young lady's sign:

HEROES WEAR SPANDEX!

And, yes, there was a ton of spandex covering all sizes and shapes of bodies.

After we saw Kevin come in with his bike we decided we needed to go to the finish line to wait for him. The finish line was right next to the area where the runners were beginning the run. (remember, that was after the 2 mile or so swim and the 25 mile bike part...)

When I saw Kevin coming to the end I quickly snapped a picture. Evidently not fast enough cause I had a perfectly good picture of someone I didn't know at all! Don't you love digital photography? That photo was trashed. We do think this is Kevin at the finish line. He's one of those two guys in spandex. (hey Kev ... are you on the right or the left?) He started at 7:30 so his approximate finish time would be 2 hours, 30 minutes.

He came in 347 out of 3,933. I guess all 5000 entrants didn't finish the race.

One of the most unusual runners we saw was a lady who was probably 8 months pregnant. She was walking and taking pictures when we saw her. She kept going forward than would walk back to take some more pictures. Don't know if she finished or not. Maybe she wanted to get that baby going. I do know she had a bib number so she really registered.

>Here's Kevin with Aimee after the race. He doesn't look like he has been swimming, biking and running for 2 and a half hours does he?
We finished up the morning by going to Chipotle's for lunch. Yum.

Needless to say I'm not getting a whole lot of quilting done. But I will be posting some quilts over the next few days as I have been taking pictures of quilts.

Happy Quilting All!
