Monday Meanderings 8 - 24 - 2020

Recently, I've seen several blogs showing quilts using collections of plaids and homespuns. Hey! I have a collection of homespuns and regular cotton plaids.  What a great idea to use them up, hopefully.  I recently got some Technique Sheets from Studio 180 Designs.  One is called Migrating Geese, a variation on flying geese blocks.  Hum, would this work with my plaids?  Why not? Bigger question, would I have enough of several backgrounds to make a lap quilt?  Maybe.

The cool part of the Technique Sheet is it has information to make the block, but even better, it gives a variety of sizes too.  Saturday afternoon I decided to cut a few and see how the blocks came out and are put together.  Here are my first few blocks.  I think I'll put sashing between the rows. And, I need to make a few blocks that become the tops and bottoms.  I might have spent an hour on these.

Sunday we were spending most of the day at our daughter's house to celebrate Sophie's 10th birthday.  But I had 30 minutes in the morning where I ironed and cut several more fabrics.  I know I'll need a lot more background but I have a nice piece from a wide back that I will be using along with a couple of homespun pieces. Each square of plaid makes two of the diagonal shapes. I've got quite a few I can start sewing tomorrow.

I'm hoping to get some more blocks stitched up tomorrow and perhaps I can mix up all the blocks and get enough blocks to make the top.  These are very quick to make.  Who knows, maybe by Friday I'll have another top done.  Yes, these blocks are that fast to make!  The ones below are not sewn together.  They remind me of making braid blocks. I'll be mixing up all of these colors and hopefully will have a pleasant mixture.

Even though this is a new start I'm pretty sure it will be finished fairly quickly.  So, who knows, I may need (want?) to start another new project.  I'm a little tired of finishing UFOs for a while!

I'm linking up with Oh Scrap, Monday Making, and Design Wall Monday. Hope you join me checking out what's being made this week. (I'll add these two links when they are posted!)

March OMG Finish

I'm happy to report I've finished my March One Monthly Goal.  Phew -- I was afraid I said I'd finish the quilt but I just reread my post and it said I would finish the top.  Which I have done today.   Yee Haw!  I worked on it off and on this month.  I had two quilts I wanted to totally finish so once those were done I could get back to finishing my Braid Shuffle top. So today I cut and sewed the borders.
The purple border came from Nancy who trimmed a quilt at my in-house retreat and left the trimmings for me. Thanks Nancy!   I've got a big T Shirt quilt on the design wall so I don't have a nice flat surface to show this off.  It's hanging on one of the long arm rails  I thought it was pretty funny that I have the top and bottom row the same.  All the greens are in the middle.  If I had noticed that I would have changed them.  Sigh.  I'll be quilting this after the T Shirt quilt is done. So you might not see it for a month or two.

I'll need to think up my goal for April.  I'll keep you posted.

I'm linking up with Needle and Thread Thursday, Mid Week Makers, Can I Get a Whoop Whoop?  and Elm Street Quilts. Join me as I skip around quilting blogs to see what folks are doing this week.

RSC Report April

This month the Rainbow Scrap Challenge was to use multicolored fabrics instead of a particular color like red or purple.  Hum, I'm thinking I want my finished product to look rainbowish.  (Yes, I do make up words when necessary!) After some deliberation I decided I would pull multicolored fabrics that would read as a color.  So I came up with a green block, a turquoise block and a purple/pink block.  (Yes, you do see a frog on the left side of the green block. I thought he looked cute there.)
When I was working on my OMG for April I found a nice piece of white Kona.  I had even cut some of it to use in the Stack N Whack but white didn't really work with the fabric.  So this find was a bonus as I have enough to make a lap quilt with these center braids.  A win-win situation.  I will be using up a nice hunk of fabric plus I'm not buying any new fabric for this scrap quilt.

Here's a few blocks laid out according to the pattern instructions.  It's another on point pattern. (Ugh, I thought I had sworn off on point designs after having done several in a row!)  You can see the pattern in this post.
I haven't figured out how I want to lay these out.  I was thinking I would run them in rainbow color order.  Maybe.  When I have more blocks made I'll think about that.   I haven't been making many blocks in each color so more blocks may be needed to do that.  So far I really like this project.  And, I'm still participating after 4 months.  Hopefully, I'll have a quilt done by the end of this year.  Time will tell.

I'm off to work on my April OMG.  I only have the last border to cut and put on. I might be done with that by the end of today.

I'm linking up with Scrap Happy Saturday from last week.  If a new one is posted for today I'll add a link there. I'm linked with 4/30 party.  Enjoy seeing what others are doing with their RSC blocks.
