Road To Heaven
This
design is number 1324 in Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt
Patterns. It is attributed to Michael James around 1978. This is a more complex block but it is definitely a
“do-able” block.   I am using
4 of these blocks in my guild challenge that is due next Saturday. I’ll do a
fairly simple quilting design in the border and I think I’ll quilt from corner
to corner in the center. (See finished top pictured at the end.) You can find a printer friendly version here.

Here are
the pieces laid out after I made the half square triangles.  Part of the challenge required us to
use only squares and half square triangles.  That’s why I made the blue triangles in the corner by half
square triangles and a square rather than a larger triangle.
Sew the squares together into rows.  I ironed the seams in the same
direction in each row.  The next
row, the seams went the opposite direction.
Now sew the rows together.  I chose to iron these seams open in hopes of spreading out
the bulk in the seams.
Broken
down this way this isn’t all that hard of a block, but there are a lot of
pieces to it.
Happy Quilting All!
