A Finished RSC Quilt

Here's the quilt I finished in January. The block is called Propeller. You can find directions at The Colorful Fabricholic blog. I made these blocks for the 2019 Rainbow Scrap Challenge. You can see a picture here.

I decided it was time to take my quilt on the road to find some place different then our house and yard to take pictures.  I was getting my 2nd Covid vaccine yesterday afternoon so we would go by a park or two, the hospital grounds, and be near the new Frederick Nationals baseball stadium.  We chose the Fred Nat's stadium. The Nat's are the farm team for the Washington Nationals, the winners of the 2019 World Series. I am not a huge baseball fan but Pat is so I listen to games while I'm doing hand work sometimes.

After receiving my shot (in less than 30 minutes), we drove over to see the new stadium.  Most of it wasn't available for us to go in. Here are the photos we were able to get.

We drove down the side of the stadium and found a place we could photograph and get some of the actual field in the view. Did I mention it was windy too?

Next we went back to the front to get a photo in front of crossed baseball bats.

The quilt shows up well in these pictures because it is so bold and geometric.  The crossed bats is different... and it isn't totally finished yet. My guess is it will have a lot of beautiful flowers or shrubs below the bats when finished.

Next up we went into the Nats Store.  I was still looking for a location for some fun photos.

Pat was looking for a new hat which he found.

I was wandering around trying to decide where else I'd photograph my quilt. Hum, a mannequin dressed in a Nat's Uniform, with a little stuffed dog with a Nat's leash and collar.  That might work well.

I had to go outside to get a picture.  The quilt isn't shining.

It's hard to see the backing but it is the same light blue with white polka dots used for the binding.  I have enough left for another quilt backing so you will see it again.

Now, a close up of the quilt and quilting.

Quilting Design: Fern Gully. (Yep, it's my current favorite design.)

Thread: Omni Natural White.

True confession time.  I wasn't all that excited about these blocks.  They are a little fussy to make.  I was making two blocks a month based on the colors given each month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Once I finished the top last year I decided it was a little more likable.  After I quilted and bound it I started to realize it was a nice quilt. After seeing these pictures I realize it is a great quilt!  Eventually it will be given away but for the time being it will be living here at home.

Do you find that you like a quilt better the further along in the process?  Seeing these pictures has certainly changed my mind about this quilt.

Next up -- Linky Parties this week: Needle and Thread Thursday, Can I Get a Whoop, Whoop?, Finished or Not Friday, Beauties Pagent, and Scrap Happy Saturday. (I'll link up as the parties get started.)   I'm going to be doing some surfing this weekend.  How about you?

Happy Quilting All!  Bonnie

  1. That's a fun design! I love it in the bright colors. Looks like you had fun on your outing to photograph it, too! I go through a love/hate relationship with a lot of my quilts. I notice I almost always fall back in love with a quilt after it's been quilted and finished.

  5. I have had the same experience of not thinking a quilt was so great when I was making it but by the time it was done I really liked it. It pays to continue the process and get to that finish line.

  6. I have definitely had that experience with a quilt where the more it came together, the more I liked it. Congratulations on the finish and for getting the 2nd vaccination shot!

  7. I wasn't thrilled with the block either. But seeing your propellers all together is great. It looks like an awesome "boy" quilt to me. My DH is a radio-controlled aircraft builder and enthusiast, so airplanes are a topic of conversation on this house. I think this would make a great "guy" quilt!

  10. What a super finish, Bonnie! I love the bright colors and movement of this quilt. And this is such a fun photo shoot! Of course it had to be windy to show off your propellers :)

I completely understand that feeling of liking a quilt better and better as it progresses. Sometimes I don't like mine until after binding!

  12. Congrats on the bright and beautiful quilt, and on getting your second shot! Love the photo shoot at the stadium. Sunshine really sets off the quilting.

  13. Your Propellers quilt is striking! Who couldn’t love it? And the photo of it with the baseball bat echoes the “crossed” arms. So appropriate! I believe we’ve all had the “hate to like to love” metamorphosis with our quilts (and rarely - but assuredly - in the other direction too).

  19. It is a great quilt! And the quilting was just the icing on the cake. Perfect for Propellers. I didn't recognize the block so glad you said what it is. Color placement sure makes a difference. I started making Propeller blocks late last year as a RSC project using the Ladies Art Co. Block Tool for instructions and mine looks like a completely different block. It's always fun to see variations. Congrats on that great finish!

  20. I think all quits go through phases of love and hate. As long as you end up on the love phase though. The color are great on your quilt and the quilting really brings a nice texture. Congratulations on your second dose of the vaccine! Normal is in our sights!

  21. I usually go through phases of like and dislike in the opposite direction. Some quilts are the exception. It's always nice to love a quilt when you are finished. Your quilting on it is great.

  22. Congrats on fun and colorful finish. You did get some fun photos too. A quilt I'm not too fond of at the start often grows on me as I get close to the finish. Thankfully I've only had a couple that didn't.

  23. That's a really pretty & bright quilt. I love it! I don't think the backdrop would make any difference -- always pretty! Sure made for a nice day for an outing!

  25. What a cheerful and happy finish!!! It is shining - I can see the sparkle!!! Getting good outdoor pictures has been a struggle with all the snow and the rain and then when that lets up it is too darn breezy.

  26. Hi Bonnie. I love your quilt and all the great shots at the baseball stadiums. My husband and I are big fans of baseball and can hardly wait to be in the stands again for a real game. There have been many times during the construction of a quilt when I have doubted my choices but then was very happy with the result.
